New heights

Their laughter echoed on the rooftop where they sat at the resort, with a few drinks on the round table before them. It was evening and an afrobeat music could be heard playing in the background of the bar. “Daren, I’m so excited right now. I can’t wait for the company to be fully handed over to you,” Evan said cheerfully. Daren adjusted the collar of his dress as he sipped from his beer. “Thank you, Evan,” he said with a smile. “You know, you’re so fortunate to be born in a golden family, with a silver spoon in your mouth. I mean, you don’t have to toil hard like the rest of us before you reach greater heights. I’m really so happy for you, man,” Evan said again. “Well, it’s not as easy as you think. Like this one, I had to work for it,” he said with a chuckle and they both laughed. “Look at you, What work did you do except for the work you usually do in the bedroom?Ehh?” Evan asked with laughter and they both laughed uncontrollably. Daren heaved a sigh and his face beamed with a smile as he looked at Evan. “You know, concerning my wife. I’m still worried about her. There’s something odd with her attitudes,” he complained. “Even after the pregnancy?” Evan asked. He nodded and sipped from his bottle again. “Yes. She’s still cold, sometimes she raises her voice at me and I’m beginning to feel like something’s wrong,” he said. “Wow, I thought it was about the pregnancy. But now that she has given birth, everything is supposed to change, right?” Evan asked. “Yes, that’s exactly my point. I’m really so confused at the moment. You know, today, she left the house earlier to visit Rita. And while she was away, she made a transfer of the sum of 10million naira from the account. When I talked to her about it, she said it’s payment for an expensive jewelry she bought from Rita. You know, Evan, Melisa doesn’t like it when it comes to expensive jewelry. She hardly even wears one,” he related with seriousness. Evan kept silent with a hand cupped on his chin. “So, are you suspecting she’s telling a lie?” He asked. He heaved a sigh and leaned back on his seat. “I don’t know. But I’m beginning to get suspicious,” he said. “Why don’t we trace the account the money was transferred to?” He asked. He kept silent for a moment and sighed. “That would be a good idea. But I’m thinking I should wait to see if it will happen a second time,” he said. “That’s also good. Let’s wait and see if it happens a second time,” Evan agreed and they both nodded. * His face was all smiles as he stepped into the room. He could see her lying on the bed, playing with baby May who was lying beautifully on the bed. “You are my sunshine..my only sunshine,” he sang as he walked to the bed. She laughed and stood up from the bed. “Welcome home, honey,” she greeted with a smile as she tried to give him a hug. He ignored her and walked over to the baby and she frowned. He sat on the bed and began to sing for the baby. “I can’t believe you jilted me for baby May,” she said in disbelief as she turned to look at him. He laughed and raised his head to look at her. “Jealous?” He asked with a smirk as he fondled the baby’s fingers. “This is the reason I never wanted a girl child!” She barked and he laughed hysterically. “Come over here my princess,” he urged as he stood up and opened his arms wide. She pouted her lips like a kid and moved backwards as he approached her. “Come over here!” He shouted as he pulled her back and she landed on his chest. He kissed her tenderly and she responded and wrapped her arms around his neck. “I love you, baby,” he whispered into her face and she laughed. “I love you too,” she said with a smile and he kissed her again. “Take off these clothes and go get a shower before dinner time,” she said as she walked away from him. He sighed and took off his jacket slowly. “Love, there is something I need to talk to you about,” she said as she sat on the bed. He looked at her face and saw the anxiousness in it. “What?” He asked curiously as he walked over to her. “Aunty Tham called,” she said. “And?” He asked immediately. “She wants us to visit my father,” she spilled. Silence fell in and he sat on the bed and rubbed his palm over his head. “She’s right. We need to visit your father,” he said. “I..I don’t know if he will pay attention to us. I believe he’s still angry,” she said sadly. He heaved a sigh and looked at her face. “Maybe he will give us an audience at the sight of baby May,” he assumed. She kept silent and nodded. “So, when will we be paying him a visit?” He asked. “That should be after your trip to Abuja,” she replied and he nodded. “That’s great,” he said as he stood up from the bed. “I need a warm shower,” he said as he proceeded to the bathroom with her eyes trailing after him. * It was a warm and beautiful afternoon at Rita’s place. Both ladies sat with their eyes fixed on the tv and their faces wearing a smile. “You know, visiting your father isn’t a bad idea,” Rita said as she sipped from her drink. “Yes, and I hope we can settle things amicably too. I..I’ve missed him so much,” she said, sadly. “Cheer up, babe. Everything will be fine,” Rita assured with a smile. “Rita, it’s time!” She exclaimed with excitement as she looked at the tv where Daren, alongside Mrs. Selina Taiwo and Elsa Boseman appeared on the screen. They could see a lot of TV reporters and other noble businessmen present with them for the reveal. Today, Daren was to be made CEO of the Jack$Rose wine company and a lot of TV stations are airing the event. “And finally, let’s welcome the new CEO of the Jack&Rose wine company, Mr. Daren, Taiwo,” they heard the chairman announce and there was a loud applause from everyone present. Rita looked at Melisa whose face was filled with excitement as she clapped and cheered at her husband’s achievement. “All thanks to you,” she said and Melisa smiled. “We won,” she said with her glass raised high. “Yes, and cheers to new heights,” Rita said with a smile and she smiled broadly.
