THE CHASE

860 Words
The forest didn’t stay quiet for long. Seren felt it first. That shift in the air. Subtle but wrong. “They’re moving,” she said. Ryker didn’t look at her. His gaze stayed fixed on the trees. “I know.” A faint sound echoed in the distance. Not loud. But deliberate. Footsteps. More than one. Seren’s chest tightened. “How many?” Ryker’s expression hardened slightly. “Enough.” That was all she needed to hear. The energy inside her stirred again, restless, reacting before she could fully understand it. This time, it didn’t feel out of control. It felt alert. “What do we do?” she asked. Ryker finally looked at her. “We move.” He didn’t wait. Seren followed instantly. They slipped into the trees, moving fast but controlled. Ryker didn’t run blindly, he moved with purpose, weaving through narrow paths, avoiding open ground. Seren stayed close behind him, her senses stretched wide. She could feel it now. Not just one presence. Several. “They’re tracking,” she said under her breath. Ryker nodded once. “Yes.” A branch snapped somewhere behind them. Closer this time. Seren’s pace quickened. “They’re gaining.” “Not yet,” Ryker said. But she could hear it. Feel it. They were getting closer. The forest seemed tighter now, the trees pressing in as if trying to slow them down. Shadows stretched across their path, shifting with every movement. Seren’s breathing stayed steady but her heart pounded harder with every step. Then Ryker stopped. Seren nearly ran into him. “What” “Quiet.” She froze instantly. The forest fell into silence. Too sudden. Too complete. Seren’s stomach dropped. “They’re here,” Ryker said softly. A figure stepped out from behind the trees ahead. Then another. And another. Seren’s pulse spiked. Three. No Four. They weren’t rogues. Their movements were too controlled. Too precise. Their eyes… too aware. One of them stepped forward. “You’ve made this easier than we expected,” he said. Seren’s jaw tightened. Ryker didn’t move. “You shouldn’t have come this far,” Ryker replied calmly. The man’s gaze shifted to Seren. Sharp. Calculating. “That’s her,” he said. Seren felt it immediately. That pressure. Stronger now. Not fear. Recognition. Her fingers curled slightly at her sides. “Stay back,” Ryker murmured. Seren didn’t argue. But she didn’t step back either. The men spread out slowly, forming a loose circle. Not rushing. Not careless. They knew what they were doing. “You don’t understand what you’re protecting,” one of them said to Ryker. Ryker’s voice didn’t change. “I understand enough.” The man smiled faintly. “No. You don’t.” Seren’s chest tightened. “What do you want?” she asked. All eyes shifted to her. The leader stepped forward slightly. “You.” The word landed cold. Seren swallowed. “Why?” A pause. Then “Because you shouldn’t exist.” The energy inside her reacted instantly. Sharp. Violent. The ground beneath her feet trembled faintly. Ryker moved slightly in front of her. “Careful,” he warned. But it was already too late. One of them lunged. Seren barely saw it happen. Ryker intercepted instantly, slamming into the attacker mid motion. The impact echoed through the clearing as they crashed into the ground. Everything exploded into movement. Another attacker came from the side. Seren reacted on instinct, stepping back, her breath catching as her focus snapped into place. The energy surged. Not wild this time. Focused. The man reached for her The shadows moved. They lashed out from the ground, wrapping around his arm mid strike. He froze. Seren’s eyes widened. She hadn’t… The man growled, trying to pull free but the shadows tightened. “What is this” Seren’s breath came faster. “I didn’t mean” “Yes, you did,” Ryker’s voice cut through sharply. “Hold it.” Her focus snapped back. The shadows responded immediately. Tighter. Stronger. The man dropped to one knee. The others paused. Just for a second. And that second changed everything. Ryker broke free from his opponent and moved fast. Too fast. He struck with precision, forcing two of them back at once. “Move!” he snapped. Seren didn’t hesitate. She released the shadows And ran. Her heart pounded as she pushed through the trees, faster than before, her body moving with a sharp awareness she hadn’t fully realized she had. Behind her The sounds of fighting. Then Footsteps. “They’re still coming,” she whispered. Her chest tightened. Of course they were. She pushed harder. The forest blurred around her. Branches snapped. Shadows stretched. The ground shifted beneath her feet, but she didn’t slow. Then suddenly She stopped. Not by choice. Something stood in front of her. Seren’s breath caught. A single figure. Still. Waiting. Different from the others. Stronger. His eyes locked onto hers. And he smiled. “So,” he said quietly, “We finally found you.” Seren’s heart dropped. Behind her Footsteps closed in. And for the first time since this began… She realized something terrifying. She wasn’t running anymore.
