chapter 2;Being Me (Episode two)

The weeks after Maya joined the robotics club became some of the happiest she had ever experienced. Every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, she and Ethan stayed after school to work on their projects. What started as a simple club activity soon became the best part of both of their weeks. One afternoon, the club adviser, Mrs. Parker clapped her hands to get everyone's attention. "Listen up, everyone! The Regional Robotics Challenge is only a month away. This year, you'll compete in pairs, and the winning team will represent Westbridge High at the state competition." Excited whispers spread through the room. Mrs. Parker smiled. "I've already decided on the teams." She looked at Maya and Ethan. "You two will work together." Ethan turned to Maya with a grin. "I was hoping she'd say that." Maya smiled back. "So was I." --- The project wasn't easy. Their robot had to navigate a maze, pick up small blocks, and place them in the correct locations—all without human assistance. Some days, everything went perfectly. Other days, nothing worked. One Thursday afternoon, the robot suddenly spun in circles before crashing into the wall. Ethan sighed dramatically. "I think it's trying to escape." Maya burst into laughter. "I don't blame it. If I had to listen to us argue about coding all day, I'd run away, too." He laughed. "I wasn't arguing." "You absolutely were." "I was passionately explaining my brilliant idea." "Oh? Is that what we're calling it now?" The two of them laughed so hard that the rest of the club looked over. Mrs. Parker smiled to herself. "They work well together," she quietly told another teacher. "Very well." --- As the competition grew closer, Maya and Ethan began spending time together outside of school, too. One Saturday morning, they met at the town library to research new programming techniques. After finishing their work, Ethan suggested they take a walk through the nearby park. The autumn breeze rustled the golden leaves above them. "So," Ethan said, "what's something you've always wanted to do?" Maya thought for a moment. "I've always wanted to visit a real observatory." "The kind with giant telescopes?" She nodded excitedly. "I'd love to spend an entire night looking at planets and galaxies." Ethan smiled. "That sounds... surprisingly fun." She laughed. "Surprisingly?" "I never imagined I'd say that." "What about you?" she asked. He looked up at the sky. "I've always wanted to travel." "Anywhere in particular?" "Everywhere." They continued walking, talking about dreams they had never shared with anyone else. For Maya, it felt effortless. She wasn't worried about saying the wrong thing. She wasn't pretending. She was simply herself. --- By Monday morning, rumours had begun spreading around school. "I heard Maya and Ethan spent the weekend together." "They're always together now." "Do you think they're dating?" Chloe overheard the conversation and smiled. "Not yet," she whispered to Sophie. "But give it time." --- That afternoon, Maya sat in the library reading while waiting for the robotics club to begin. A freshman walked over nervously. "Excuse me..." Maya looked up. "Yes?" "I heard you're really good at chemistry." "I try." "Could you explain this homework question?" "Of course." For the next fifteen minutes, Maya patiently helped him understand the lesson. When he finally solved the problem on his own, his face lit up. "I get it!" "See? You just needed someone to explain it differently." "Thank you so much." As the student walked away, Ethan approached carrying two bottles of water. "I saw that." "What?" "You really enjoy helping people." Maya shrugged. "I guess I do." "You smiled the whole time." She laughed. "I didn't notice." "I did." He looked at her thoughtfully. "You know..." "What?" "When you first came here, I thought you were trying really hard to fit in." "I was." "But now..." He smiled warmly. "You don't have to try anymore." Those words stayed with Maya for the rest of the day. --- Finally, the day of the Regional Robotics Challenge arrived. Schools from across the county filled the large convention hall. Teams carefully carried their robots to the competition tables. Some machines were huge. Others were sleek and polished. Maya looked around nervously. "Our robot suddenly feels very small." Ethan nudged her shoulder. "Maybe." "But I think it's smarter." She laughed. "You really know how to calm someone down." "I learned from the best." When their turn came, the countdown began. "Three..." "Two..." "One..." "Start!" Their robot rolled forward. It turned perfectly in the first corner. Picked up the first block. Then the second. Everything was going exactly as planned. Until... The robot suddenly stopped. Maya's heart sank. "Oh no..." The timer continued counting down. For a split second, panic filled her mind. Then she remembered something. "The backup command!" Ethan's eyes widened. "You're right!" Following the competition rules, they activated the approved backup sequence they had programmed before the event. The robot beeped once. Then, I started moving again. It completed the course with only seconds remaining. The audience erupted into applause. Maya let out a huge sigh of relief. "We actually did it." Ethan laughed with relief. "We actually did." When the judges announced the results later that afternoon, Westbridge High had finished in first place. The entire robotics team cheered. Mrs. Parker hugged both of them. "I knew you could do it!" As everyone celebrated, Ethan looked at Maya. "I'm proud of you." She smiled. "We won together." For a brief moment, neither of them looked away. There was something different in the way they smiled at each other now. Neither of them said it aloud. But both of them were beginning to realize the truth. This wasn't just friendship anymore. It was becoming something much deeper.
