Chapter 4

850 Words
Everything happened too fast for Mila to react. Kate covered her bleeding cheek, turned toward the staircase, and tears instantly welled in her eyes. "Jacob, I don't know how I upset Mila. She suddenly just... just..." Her voice trembled. "Jacob, I have an important interview this afternoon. What am I supposed to do?" Jacob hurried downstairs. After carefully checking the wound, he immediately ordered the servants to call the family doctor. "Don't be afraid. I'm here," he coaxed patiently. Kate kept looking back at him as the servants led her away for treatment. Seeing this, Mila sneered. "What a performance." "She ruined her own future just to frame you?" Jacob's brows were tightly furrowed, his eyes full of anger. "Mila, we were together for eight years. Whether we fought, broke up, or got back together, as long as it didn't cross a line, I always gave in to you. "But this time, you went too far. "You were the one who abandoned me for no reason back then. Now you suddenly barge into my peaceful life and deliberately disfigure Kate?" Seeing that Jacob had already decided she had done it on purpose, Mila snapped, "Eight years. After eight years, do you really not know what kind of person I am? How could I possibly hurt her face on purpose?" He hesitated for a moment. "I saw it with my own eyes. Don't try to argue." Mila was about to fight back when a woman's scream suddenly came from the living room. Jacob rushed over and saw the doctor removing a tiny shard from Kate's wound with tweezers. Kate looked at him pitifully. "Jacob, what if this scars?" Her voice trembled. "Do you have any idea what that could do to my career?" Jacob ordered someone to bring Mila over. "Apologize to Kate, and I won't hold this against you." Mila did not answer. Instead, her gaze fell on Kate's wound. "If it weren't for our parents' relationship, he and I would be strangers now. I won't interfere in your lives, so stop provoking me with these cheap tricks." Kate lowered her eyes. "Mila, I don't mind you staying by Jacob's side, but you can't destroy me. I worked so hard for so many years to build the career I have now." As she spoke, she dropped straight to her knees. "Please, Ms. Smith. Have mercy and let me go." Jacob froze for a few seconds, then grabbed her arm and pulled her up. "You don't need to apologize to her!" Kate leaned against his chest, her face pale as tears streamed down. Jacob held her and glanced toward the bodyguards in the distance. "Throw her out." Two bodyguards seized Mila by the arms from both sides and threw her out the door. Soon after, they tossed all her belongings across the courtyard in a scattered mess. A wave of helplessness swept through Mila. She should have hidden the fact that she was coming back. She did not pick up a single thing that had been thrown out. She simply took a taxi to the hotel she had booked earlier. After that day, Jacob did not come looking for trouble again. So Mila put all her energy into figuring out how to coax Issac. That day, she planned to choose a wedding ring as a gift for their anniversary. After arriving at the store, Mila saw a pair of rings in the display case and casually pointed at them. "Can I try this set?" The sales associate hesitated. "This set is only for display. It isn't for sale..." Just as Mila was feeling a little disappointed, another voice suddenly cut in. "Let Mila try it if she wants." At some point, Kate had appeared behind her. Seeing Kate wearing a mask, Mila gave a mocking laugh. "Wow. You really have no shame." Kate ignored her sarcasm. She personally took out the ring and forced it onto Mila's finger. Mila was surprised to find that it fit perfectly. Beside her, Kate suddenly called out in a very loud voice, "Jacob, over here." Mila quickly hid her hand behind her back. Kate linked her arm through Jacob's. "Mila came here alone to buy a wedding ring. I wanted her to give me some advice." Kate was a reporter and an influencer with over a million followers. The wedding announcement she had posted a few days ago was still trending, and the sales associates had seen it. They also knew that Mila was Jacob's first love. "Kate is so generous. She gave up the wedding ring just like that." "She doesn't even have a boyfriend. Why is she buying a wedding ring? What an attention seeker." "And she even tried on that one..." Kate took Mila's hand. "Mila, let me see." Mila held out her hand. Kate recognized at once that it was a different style, and her tone turned slightly anxious. "Mila, why aren't you wearing the ring from just now?" Mila remained calm and composed. "The design was awful, the materials were cheap, and the taste was nonexistent. I didn't like it."
