Chapter 5

Kate quietly glanced at Jacob.

The outside world only knew that pair of wedding rings had been prepared for her.

In reality, Jacob had designed them himself for Mila back then. He had named them Mila's Dream.

The only reason Kate knew was because, once, when Jacob was drunk, he had grabbed her and told her about it. The rings had originally been prepared for his proposal to Mila. He had waited ten whole years for that moment.

Kate had thought that if Mila put the ring on now, it would hit Jacob right where it hurt.

"This style is beautiful too. Mila, why don't you help me choose?" Kate said warmly, reaching as if to link arms with her.

Mila took two steps back. "I'm busy."

She turned to the sales associate and said, "I'll take this one. Once it's ready, send it to this address."

From beginning to end, she did not look at Jacob once. After leaving her hotel address, she turned to leave.

The man sat there in silence, no one knowing what he was thinking.

After Mila left, Kate slowly sat down beside Jacob.

"Jacob, help me choose one, okay?"

"Throw it away."

"What?"

Jacob lifted his stiff arm and pointed at the pair of rings Mila had mocked. There was no emotion in his eyes.

"Throw it away."

Seeing that she had achieved her goal, Kate immediately asked the sales associate to bring over a few new styles for her to try on.

Jacob showed little interest. Using company business as an excuse, he left early.

Kate watched him walk away, then angrily threw the ring Mila had tried on into the trash.

That night, a trending topic shot to number one.

Mila immediately sensed something was wrong. She tapped in and saw that a media outlet had published the love story between Jacob and Kate, while also mentioning how he had been dumped unilaterally back then.

Soon after, gossip accounts dug up the story, claiming that Mila had dumped Jacob years ago and had now come back to interfere in his relationship. They even said she had only remembered Jacob because she was older now and could not find anyone to marry her.

A: [Does she really think she's some returning first love? Mila's first priority should be uninstalling Dreame.]

C: [I found her account! Everyone, go after her.]

The comment section was filled with abuse. Worse, people began doxxing her personal information. They edited her ID photo into a grotesque memorial portrait and spread it everywhere. Some even found the Smith Family's old estate, livestreamed themselves staking it out, and splashed paint on the gate whenever someone sent them a gift.

The more Mila read, the more irritated she became.

Then an unknown number suddenly called her phone.

She hung up, only for another call to come in.

Taking advantage of a brief gap between calls, Mila quickly dialed Jacob's number. As soon as he picked up, she questioned him.

"Jacob, keep your people under control."

"Got it."

Those two brief words only made her feel more uneasy.

The Hayes Family controlled the largest entertainment company in the industry. Suppressing a trending topic would be nothing to them. Back when she and Jacob were together, someone had tried to dig up her personal information. As soon as Jacob found out, he had taken them to court immediately.

After a while, she refreshed the trending page and saw that Jacob had personally issued a clarification.

But every sentence pointed to how she had left without saying goodbye back then. He made it clear that he would not get back together with her and would treasure Kate even more. Their wedding would be held in three days.

He also showed off the compensation he had given Kate: two apartments in the city center and a transfer of about 5.2 million.

Looking at all of it, Mila let out a scornful laugh. Then she simply turned off her phone and stopped caring.

Before shutting it down, she left Issac a voice message.

"Honey, three days from now is our wedding anniversary. I prepared a surprise for you, so look forward to it. I'm going to sleep first."

In the Hayes Family's study.

"Mr. Hayes, the trending topic has exploded. Netizens have already gone to the Smith Family's old estate to stake out Ms. Smith. If we don't stop this now, I'm afraid Ms. Smith won't be able to hold up," the assistant said worriedly.

Without lifting his head, Jacob said, "Everything in the news is true."

After a few seconds, he continued, "In ten minutes, remove every trending topic. As for the people who doxxed her, prepare legal notices."

The assistant had just agreed when he suddenly exclaimed, "Mr. Hayes, the trending topics are already gone!"

Jacob abruptly raised his head. "Who did it?"

The assistant made several phone calls. After confirming the information, he reported, "Someone from Brook City applied pressure. They won't allow anything about Ms. Smith to spread any further."

Who in Brook City would help Mila?

He thought about it for a long time, but no answer came to him.
