CHAPTER 9: UNEXPECTED VISITOR

634 Words
The first rays of sunlight barely touched the safe house when a soft knock echoed through the underground walls. Mariah jumped, clutching the Black Cake box like a lifeline. Zeke’s hand shot out, gripping hers, steadying her. “Stay quiet,” he whispered. “Do not answer yet.” The knock came again, this time sharper, more insistent. Mariah’s heart pounded so loudly she was certain the visitor above could hear it. Zeke moved to the small hatch they had used to monitor the perimeter, peering through a narrow slit. A woman’s face appeared, partially concealed by a hood. Her eyes, sharp and calculating, met Zeke’s with an intensity that made his jaw tighten. “Who is she?” Mariah whispered. Zeke didn’t answer immediately. He studied the woman carefully, noting the way she moved—precise, controlled, and aware of the danger around her. “Potential ally,” he muttered. “But we approach carefully. One false move and it could be a trap.” The woman raised her hands slightly, a gesture of peace, and spoke softly. “Zeke… it’s me. You don’t know me, but I knew your mother well. She sent me.” Mariah’s eyes widened. “Sent you? Why?” Zeke opened the hatch just enough to let the woman slip inside. She moved quickly, scanning the room with a trained eye, then focused on Mariah. “You’re Mariah, I presume. I’ve been expecting you.” Mariah’s throat tightened. “Expecting me? How?” The woman smiled faintly. “Your mother prepared for every scenario. She left instructions for this very moment. You’re in more danger than you know, and the pages you carry—they’re the key to survival. I’m here to help, but only if you follow my guidance.” Mariah clutched the Black Cake box even tighter. “How do I know I can trust you?” The woman’s eyes softened, but there was a steely determination behind them. “Because your mother trusted me, and because the people coming for you will kill without hesitation. Time is not a luxury you have. Decide quickly, Mariah.” Zeke stepped closer, his protective presence grounding her. “We’ll trust her—for now,” he said, his tone firm. The woman nodded, pulling a small folder from her coat. She handed it to Mariah, who opened it with trembling hands. Inside were documents, photos, and notes—clues about the intruders, their methods, and connections to Julian Kane. “This is everything I’ve managed to gather over the years,” the woman explained. “Your mother trusted me to guide you through the Black Cake, but I wasn’t to interfere until you were ready. Now, you are.” Mariah absorbed the information, her mind racing. The threads of her mother’s past were weaving into the present, and the danger that had followed her into the night was far from over. Zeke’s eyes met hers, and she saw the same mixture of fear, determination, and something else—something unspoken but powerful. Together, they had survived the night. Together, they would face whatever came next. The woman’s gaze lingered on the Black Cake box. “Remember, Mariah, every secret you uncover will test you. Some will hurt. Some will save you. But every choice you make determines your path.” Mariah nodded, the weight of responsibility settling heavily on her shoulders. She glanced at Zeke, and for the first time, allowed herself to believe that together, they might navigate the labyrinth of secrets and survive the dangers ahead. Outside, the world remained unaware of the shadows stalking them, but inside, a fragile alliance had formed—a trio bound by secrets, danger, and the unyielding drive to uncover the truth hidden within the pages of the Black Cake.
