You're going to stop working at the law firm.
Those words echoed in Lena's head like a persistent drumbeat, growing louder with each passing moment.
At first she felt nothing, only just staring at Rafe's blank face. But with each passing drumbeat, the words sank in deeper. And then anger filled her.
"What the f**k do you mean I would stop working at the law firm?" she bursted out, her teeth clenched.
"It means, Selene," he said calmly, "that it would attract attention. Attention that we don't need. Though, I'm sure by now people already know what you do, but we'll prevent talks if you stop now."
Lena was shaking with anger but forced it down as she asked, "What kinds of talks? Why do people care if the capo's wife is a paralegal?"
