“I cannot stay here by myself,” Fiona immediately protested, jumping up from a small bush she’d been carefully pruning. “Sure you can,” he assured her. “No, I can’t,” she replied, her protest more adamant. “You’ll have to take me with you.” “Is that a demand? Mrs. Kane.” “I would say so,” she replied. A sudden haughty turn of her head, she thought the matter was finished and she went back to her work. Joshua was not at all persuaded to anything. “Seems to me you’re acting a bit too big for your man’s britches,” he snapped.
