The villa was peaceful in the early morning light. Jessica had just laid Alvaro down for his nap and quietly stepped out of the nursery. Unbeknownst to her, Marrie, her mother, had wandered in moments later, drawn by the faint cooing sounds coming from within. She pushed the door open slowly and peeked inside. Alvaro was awake, his large, curious eyes blinking up at her from his crib. Marrie hesitated at the door, her fingers curling nervously around the frame. Her relationship with her grandson had been distant, not for lack of love, but because of the fractured relationship between herself and Jessica. “Oh, you’re awake, little one,” Marrie said softly, stepping closer.
