Chapter 34

Maya’s Pov My arms stayed locked around his neck, and I pulled him just a fraction closer, letting the quiet shadows of the garage wrap around us like a shield. We didn’t need words anymore. Every barrier I had built to protect myself was completely gone, replaced by the simple, undeniable truth of how deeply I cared for him. "You didn't have to do all this, Jax," I whispered against his collarbone, my voice trembling slightly as I tried to process the sheer scale of what he had done. Jax looked down at me, his dark eyes softening into something warm and steady. He slowly lowered his head, pressing his lips to mine again in a long, tender kiss that made my breath catch in my throat. It wasn't rushed or desperate. It was sweet, deliberate, and entirely real. I kissed him back, letting my fingers tangle softly in the dark hair at the nape of his neck, savoring the safe, quiet harbor we had carved out for ourselves in the middle of a world that wanted to tear us apart. When we finally broke apart, resting our foreheads together in the dim light, a quiet smile touched the corners of his mouth. "You're full of surprises, Jax Worth," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion as I looked up into his face. "Get used to it," he murmured, his thumb gently brushing across my cheekbone. "I'm just getting started." "Does this mean the ruthless Calloway heir is turning into a sentimental mechanic?" I teased softly, trying to inject a little lightness back into the heavy, emotional air. Jax chuckled low in his throat, his hands resting securely on my waist. "Only for one specific mechanic. Don't let my board of directors find out, or my reputation will be completely ruined." "Your secret is safe with me," I smiled, tracing the line of his jaw with my fingertips. "Though I have to admit, seeing you turn a wrench earlier was already pretty shocking." "I told you, I know my way around an engine," he replied, his gaze locking onto mine with an intensity that made my pulse race. "Just like I know my way around you." We stood there for a long time, talking in quiet murmurs, just holding each other in the quiet space of the workshop. The restoration of the motorcycle and the framed photographs of my parents weren't just gifts; they were proof that Jax truly saw me. He didn't want to change me or control me. He understood what mattered to my soul. "How did you even find these old photos?" I asked, looking up at the row of pictures mounted neatly on the wall. "I thought they were lost for good in my mother's old storage boxes." "I have my ways," Jax said smoothly, a faint smirk playing on his lips. "Let's just say I did some digging. You aren't the only one who knows how to investigate when they really want something." "You're impossible," I laughed, shaking my head. "Maybe so," he agreed softly. "But you wouldn't want me any other way." As the initial wave of shock and emotion settled into a warm, comfortable peace, Jax finally stepped back just enough to let me breathe, though his hand remained securely on my waist. "Come on," he said, turning toward the workbench. "There's still cake. And if we don't eat it now, the mice will find it." I laughed, wiping away the last trace of happy tears from my cheek. "You bought birthday cake? The great Jax Worth knows how to buy local bakery sweets?" "I told you, I have my sources," he teased, walking over to where a small, simple chocolate cake sat inside a white bakery box, complete with a single lit candle that he carefully clicked a lighter to ignite. We sat side by side on the edge of the workbench, sharing a single plastic fork and eating straight out of the box. It was far from the lavish, multi-course dinners the Worth probably hosted in their grand dining halls, but it was the best birthday I had ever had. For once, I wasn't worrying about university exams, engineering deadlines, or my mother's health. I was just Maya, sitting in a garage with the one person who truly understood my chaotic world. "So," Jax said, taking a bite of the cake and looking over at me. "Are you going to make a wish, or do you think you're too scientific for birthdays?" "I don't need to make a wish," I answered quietly, looking around the clean, restored garage and then back at him. "Everything I wanted is right here." Jax's expression softened completely, the dark edges of his usual guarded self melting away into pure affection. He reached out, using his thumb to gently wipe a tiny crumb of chocolate from the corner of my lip. "Happy birthday, Maya." When we finished the cake, Jax drove me back to the university dorms. The campus was completely dark and silent under the late-night sky. He pulled his black car up near the side entrance, cutting the engine smoothly. Instead of getting out right away, I turned in my seat to look at him. "Thank you, Jax. Really. This was... the best birthday gift I could have ever asked for." Jax turned his head, meeting my gaze in the dim light of the dashboard. His expression grew serious, the playful teasing vanishing completely. "You deserve more than a clean garage and a cake, Maya. Never forget that." My heart did a warm, steady flip in my chest. I reached across the center console, my fingers brushing against his hand resting on the gear shift. He immediately turned his hand over, intertwining his fingers securely with mine. "I know," I whispered. I opened the car door and stepped out into the cool night air. I walked up the stone steps of the dorm building, pausing at the heavy glass doors to look back. Jax was still parked there, watching me with that familiar, intense focus. He gave a single, slow nod, and only when I pushed the door open and stepped safely inside did his car pull away into the dark. I walked up the quiet stairs to my room, feeling lighter than I had in years. The secret relationship we were building was growing stronger every single day, rooted not in contracts or fear, but in genuine trust and shared dreams. As I finally changed into my pajamas and crawled into bed, I smiled into the dark, knowing that whatever came next, I was ready to face it.
