Lina finished making a quick sandwich for herself and sat at the kitchen island. Nelson was still eating the chips, leaning against the counter like he owned the place. Lina watched him for a moment, then finally asked the question that had been bothering her since the alley. “Why do you behave that way toward me?” she asked quietly. Nelson paused mid-bite, looking up at her. “What way?” “You know what I mean,” Lina said. “At school you act like I’m the enemy. You’re rude, you push me around, you call me names. But then you show up here, eat my food, and act like… this.” She gestured at him. “Like it’s normal.” Nelson chewed slowly, then swallowed.
