Burwood Road, Hawthorn 1878.It’s been twelve years since David and I and Lizzie and William left Melbourne. The children don’t remember it. Their home, until recently was New Zealand. They all have the accent that identifies them as not quite from Melbourne. When they speak I notice people listen to pick up where they are from.
The changes to this city are extraordinary. When I was a child, Melbourne was dirt streets and timber, ramshackle buildings with the odd stone one here and there. Now there are handsome buildings in the city centre. A General Post Office building on the corner of Elizabeth and Bourke Streets has become a meeting point, an exhibition building is being constructed in the Carlton Gardens to host the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1
