Portland, Victoria, 1862At forty-six years of age, Elizabeth Blay gave birth to a son. Stillborn, her husband John, ordered the child not have a name. They would register his birth and death as “unnamed”. 1 After giving birth to fourteen children, two of whom had died, Elizabeth wanted to remember each of her children. She called the perfectly formed little boy Fogarty and would keep his memory and the picture of his beautiful, pink, flawless, face in her heart. When she called his memory to her mind, she would know he was Fogarty, not “unnamed”.
