February 1849Sarah looked after the small children while Margaret caught up on mending for customers. Apart from donations from the church, this was her only income and the only way she could feed the children and pay the rent. Caroline and Elizabeth were at school. Doubting she would have enough money to send William, John or Frances to school when they were of the age, she planned to use the techniques her wonderful grandmother Sarah Blay had used when teaching her and Sadie. Her step-father James Blay Jr refused to let her and her sister attend school, but her resourceful mother found a way.
