Saturday 12 January 1884The New Year began with a huge celebration outside the GPO in Elizabeth Street in Melbourne. Margaret didn’t attend, her eyesight was failing. She thought it was because of all the years she’d spent sitting in poor light mending clothes and dressmaking, and she found it difficult to get on and off the train. Her grandson, William, now nineteen and a very tall, strong-looking young man, sat opposite her in the parlour of her daughter Maggie’s house telling her all about the New Year festivities. She hadn’t been into the city for about four years, the last time was when Elizabeth took her shopping at the Royal Arcade for her birthday. She was interested to hear how things were changing.
‘It’s a very busy place, Grandmama,’ William told her.
