When Richard Werrett was born in Rangeworthy, Gloucestershire in 1832, his parents, Mark, and Ann (Window) were living in the same district they’d both been born in. He was the last of ten children and learned quickly about being self-sufficient as older siblings died before their time. His brother, Mark, born in 1829, died in 1837. Richard was five at the time. His sister, Caroline, born in 1821, died in 1843’ Richard was eleven. When Caroline died, Richard made a promise to himself that he would not die in the same place he was born. He wanted to see what the world offered. On the 25th June 1858, nine months after his marriage to Mary Jane Williams, on 17 September 1857, Richard took Mary’s hand and helped her off the Monsoon1 on to the jetty in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
