chapter 2

For a second, she was thankful to her sixth sense for bailing her out this time. Alexia got hold of the wooden bed frame and used it to guide the way onto the soft pile of foam. Now, Phil's bed was designed in a special way to make life easier for him. Alexia always loved her big brother even though he was born with a disability. Phil was born with paralysis of both feet and was also infected by eye bacteria, which means he can't see objects without the aid of special glasses to correct the eye disease. Phil is a ten-year-old boy who is quiet and doesn't talk much whenever he's around people in public. It hurts her to see how helpless he can be without his glasses and crutches. Some people don't like hanging around him due to his poor and limp physique which sets him below his mates, instead, they prefer to bully and make fun of his appearance whenever they get the chance. Alexia does all she can to make Phil feel loved, but the outside world does the opposite and their impact on him is quite obvious. Though Phil falls back to music as his escape route whenever he is having a bad day, deep inside, the family knows how special Phil can be. His sense of humor is superb and on his day, it's always rib-cracking to those who are lucky to come close enough to see that other side of him. Sadly, not everyone knows how to press the right buttons to bring out the stronger side of him. Alexia, hitting her forehead with her palm trying to make her mind move away from thinking about Phil, slowly bent low to check if Phil was still in bed. She ran her hands erratically on the soft bed, setting her right knee on the edge of the mattress and maintaining balance standing on the other foot, stretching her hands trying to touch Philly, but she gave up hope when she got beyond the base of the bed. "Phil isn't here either!" She sighed with frustration. Alexia, now covered in sweats, wished she hadn't put on her thick pajamas last night, but she later blamed it on the cold of December. Slowly getting up from Phil's bed, she still decided, out of curiosity, to check beside Phil's bedside if his crutches were still there, but just as she had expected, it wasn't there either. Alexia, now standing in the dark, confused about what to do next, heard sharp and strange movements around the door, and it didn't seem natural or even human-like. It increased her pulse and startled her. She got petrified and clueless because she doesn't know if someone or something else is inside the dark room with her! "Oh my god"! She let out her breath and almost wanted to cry. But she knew it would be foolish of her to do so, as it would only make it easier for anybody to easily find where she is and probably attack her in the dark. It was at this moment that she realized how vulnerable and helpless she was. Her mind was advising her to scream for help, but she knew that it would be of no use because she already called out for help earlier but no one came to her rescue. She quietly sat on the floor, feeling pressed with a knot tied in her stomach, and was shuddering with so much fear that she couldn't think straight anymore. She remembered once again that she ain't a little girl anymore, she summoned some guts and decided to act like the big girl she is. Not sure of what to do next, the words just came out of her mouth unauthorized. "Hello?" she said faintly, not too sure if she just made a deadly mistake. After some seconds, she heard no reply. so she thought maybe whoever is in the dark with her probably didn't hear her enough. So she decided to give it another try, though now, ready for what was to come after. She clears her throat and repeats the exact word. "Hello?"... she said, tilting her head down in the dark, trying to hear the faintest sound of movement. For a while, she stopped breathing, hoping that it wouldn't overshadow any other sound in the background. When she couldn't hold it any longer, Alexia let go of her breath as she gasped for air in her desperate lungs!
