chapter five

She woke with the taste of him still lingering on her lips. It disgusted her, the memory of that kiss, the way her body had leaned into him when her mind screamed to run. She told herself it was adrenaline, shock, the lingering terror of being cornered. Nothing more. Nothing real. Yet the lie hollowed her chest as soon as she thought it. The house was quiet, too quiet, as though Damien had melted back into the shadows. She should have been relieved. Instead, unease knotted in her gut, because absence didn’t mean safety. It meant waiting. She busied herself, hands trembling as she fumbled with the buttons of her blouse, trying to scrub away every trace of him from her skin. The mirror offered no reassurance. Her lips were still red, her eyes too wide, her pulse still written plainly across her flushed cheeks. She could not hide what she had let happen. A soft knock startled her. Her heart leapt, then sank when she recognized the voice on the other side. “Are you awake?” It wasn’t Damien. It was Marcus. Her friend, her confidant, the one she thought she could still trust. She opened the door with a nervous smile, hoping her face didn’t betray the storm inside. “You look… shaken,” Marcus said, studying her. “Bad dream?” She nodded too quickly. “Something like that.” But Marcus wasn’t convinced. He glanced down the hall, his expression tight. “Listen, I need to tell you something. It’s about Damien.” Her breath caught. “What about him?” Marcus stepped closer, lowering his voice. “He isn’t who he says he is. I’ve been digging, asking around. The stories don’t match. His name isn’t Damien. Or at least, it wasn’t before he showed up here.” Her stomach dropped. She tried to laugh, tried to push it away, but Marcus’s eyes were hard, certain. “He’s been lying to you,” Marcus pressed. “And worse, he’s been lying about why he’s here. You think he’s just watching you? It’s more than that. He’s playing you, and he’s dangerous.” Her thoughts whirled, images of Damien’s confession slamming against Marcus’s warning. Damien had said he watched her because he saw her, because he wanted her. But if his very name was false, then everything else could be too. She forced herself to meet Marcus’s gaze. “What do you mean, ‘playing me’?” He hesitated, as though weighing how much truth she could handle. “I think you should see for yourself.” Marcus reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. When she took it, her fingers brushed his, grounding her in a moment that felt too fragile. She unfolded the paper slowly. It was a photograph. Grainy, old, but unmistakable. Damien’s face stared back at her, younger but still him — only the name scrawled underneath wasn’t Damien. It was Julian Kane. Her chest tightened. She read the name again and again, as though repetition would make it false. “There’s more,” Marcus said, his voice grim. “Julian Kane disappeared years ago after being accused of…” He trailed off, jaw tightening. “After being accused of manipulating women. There were whispers of fraud, of darker things that never made it to trial. He vanished, until now.” Her hands shook, the paper threatening to slip through her fingers. The echo of Damien’s words, Because you’re mine, now twisted with an uglier edge. “Why are you showing me this?” she whispered, her throat dry. “Because you need to understand what you’re dealing with,” Marcus said. “He isn’t some dark savior. He’s a liar, a predator. And if you let him, he’ll destroy you.” The truth should have set her free. Instead, it tangled tighter around her. She wanted to believe Marcus. She wanted to burn every memory of Damien and his searing kiss. But doubt clawed at her. Because when Damien had touched her, there had been no hesitation, no falseness in his hunger. Lies could twist names and histories, but could they twist desire? Her silence must have betrayed her conflict, because Marcus’s jaw clenched. “Don’t tell me you’re actually considering defending him.” “I’m not—” she started, but the words caught in her throat. Before she could untangle them, another voice slid like smoke into the hallway. “Defending me against what?” Damien stood at the end of the corridor, his presence chilling and magnetic all at once. He wasn’t supposed to be here. She hadn’t even heard him approach, but now his gaze was locked on her, then flicked coldly to Marcus. Marcus stiffened, shifting subtly to stand between them. “You should leave,” he said, his voice steady. Damien’s smile was sharp, humorless. “And why would I do that?” The tension snapped taut. She felt caught in the middle, pulled in two directions — Marcus’s steady warning on one side, Damien’s dangerous allure on the other. Her pulse throbbed in her ears. Marcus spoke first. “Because she knows who you are. Or should I say, Julian?” The name dropped like a blade. Her breath hitched, watching for Damien’s reaction, desperate for a tell. But Damien didn’t flinch. He didn’t even blink. He simply tilted his head, that unreadable smile curving deeper. “So you’ve been digging,” he said softly. “Careful, Marcus. Digging too deep gets people buried.” “Is it true?” she demanded, her voice breaking through before Marcus could answer. “Is your name Julian Kane?” Damien’s eyes finally returned to hers, and for a moment she saw something flicker there — not guilt, but recognition. “Names are just masks,” he said, his voice smooth. “You of all people should understand that. Haven’t you been hiding behind your own?” Her breath caught, a lump forming in her throat. How did he know? Marcus stepped forward, fists tight at his sides. “Don’t twist this. Tell her the truth.” But Damien only chuckled, low and dark. “Truth? You think truth will save her? Truth is just another weapon. And I know how to use it better than you ever will.” The air in the corridor grew heavy, charged, like the split second before lightning struck. And in that moment, she realized with terrifying clarity — it didn’t matter which of them was lying more. Because either way, she was standing on the edge of a betrayal that would shatter her no matter which direction she fell.
