INTERMISSION Carolyn “You did this, didn’t you?” Daniels isn’t just day-drunk, he’s dawn-drunk. He’s phoning me up at seven in the morning Eastern to scream at me. His voice is slurry and keeps cracking, and I can hear a woman’s heels aggressively clacking back and forth on a hardwood floor in the background. “I’m sorry, sir, what are you talking about? I’m in Las Vegas following up on the Stone case.” I know exactly what he’s talking about. The hard click-thud of a suitcase being slammed closed in the background confirms it. His wife’s leaving.
