Chapter 6 The Expencieve Cure

1132 Words
For my desperate call, the nurses rushed to us and laid Cecilia on a bed before taking her into the A&E department. Sasha and I followed closely, but at one point, a nurse stopped us. "I’m sorry, but you need to wait outside. We will come to see you as soon as possible," she said. I nodded, feeling Sasha’s hand on my shoulder as she led me to a chair, and we sat down. A few minutes later, I saw the remaining assistants and nurses rush toward the entrance. I knew that meant Liam had also arrived with Tiffany. I couldn't be more grateful to Sasha for making sure we got here before Liam and Tiffany arrived. I wasn't a monster; I was a mother myself, but I understood that Tiffany only acted the way she did because her mother instructed her to. I knew her actions were an attempt to make Liam abandon Cecilia and me. Fortunately, I hadn't encountered them in the hospital. I felt too weak to continue arguing with them. I just wanted my Cecilia to stay with me a little longer. It felt like ages had passed when a doctor finally approached us. “Miss Hart?” he called. I stood up and rushed to him. “How is Cecilia?” I asked, desperation in my voice. “We needed to perform emergency treatment, which saved her life, but her condition is still critical. We must keep her here for a while and watch her closely,” he said, looking at me sadly. I covered my mouth as tears rolled down my cheeks. “Can we go in to see her?” Sasha asked the doctor, who nodded. “Of course, but we need to keep her sedated,” he said. “Thank you, doctor,” Sasha replied, gently leading me into the room. It was heartbreaking to see my baby’s tiny body lying in bed, connected to so many tubes. I sat down beside her and caressed her head. “Hold on, baby; Mummy is here,” I whispered, struggling to hold back my sobs. I didn’t know if she could hear me, but I didn’t want to show her my weakness or make her doubt her strength—strength that helped her stay with us a little longer. About an hour later, the doctor returned. He checked a few things on the monitors, then sighed as he hung the records back on Cecilia’s bed. “Miss Hart, can you come out with me for a moment? I have something to tell you,” he said. I didn't want to leave Cecilia's side, but I nodded, unsure of what he wanted to say. I hope it's something positive. I followed him out into the corridor, finding it strange when he looked around before he spoke. “Miss Hart, I’d like to share some sensitive information with you,” he began, and I looked at him in confusion. “What sensitive information?” I asked. “Your daughter has a rare werewolf disease that is not curable. However, there is ongoing research. A team has discovered that a matching bone marrow transplant, combined with an experimental drug, could help,” he said, making my eyes widen. “What?” I asked in disbelief. I had hoped for this for a long time. “No, I don’t want to give you false hope, Miss Hart. This method is experimental, and the success rate is only about 50%. But since your daughter has no other options, I thought I should share this information with you,” he added. “Where can I get that drug?” I asked, and he sighed. “Miss Hart, the drug is very scarce; it is hard to find, and I won’t lie to you: the full treatment is quite expensive,” he said, which frustrated me, but I wanted to stay focused. “How much?” I pressed. “Seven million, if we include everything,” he replied. When those words left his mouth, I was momentarily in shock. “Seven million?” I repeated, and he nodded sadly. Even though a glimmer of hope had appeared in my heart moments ago, I now felt a wave of despair wash over me. I couldn't believe there was a chance for my baby, yet I was the one who couldn't afford it. “Thank you, doctor,” I said, and although he seemed to expect more from me, I just turned and walked back to Cecilia’s room. As I entered, Sasha immediately stepped up to me, sensing my shock. “What happened, Serena?” she asked. I needed a few moments to gather my thoughts before I could tell her what the doctor had shared. She hugged me tightly and stayed with us for a while, but finally, she sighed. “Serena, I must step out for a bit; there’s something I need to take care of,” she said. I looked at her with a sad smile. “Thank you for everything, Sasha,” I replied. “I’ll be back shortly, okay? Just call me if you need me,” she said. I nodded and watched her leave. After she left, I moved next to Cecilia on the bed to provide some comfort. When Sasha returned, she looked worried about interrupting me. "Could you come outside with me for a moment?" she asked. I followed her outside. "Serena, I have good news. I found a source for that drug you need," she said. I sighed sadly, "But I can’t afford it." "What? Liam is rich; this is nothing for him," she replied, confused. I laughed bitterly. "He may be rich, but he doesn’t see us as family anymore. He doesn’t care about Cecilia," I said, turning back to the room. Sasha grabbed my shoulder. "I can’t believe he’d refuse to save his daughter," she said. I lowered my head. "I told you about the deal. He's waiting for me to leave after Cecilia passes away. He doesn’t care," I replied, heading back to Cecilia. Sasha followed, frustrated. "So that’s it? You’re just going to give up?" she asked, making me stop. "I never said that," I told her. "It is just that we can't count on Liam," I told her quietly, still worried that Cecilia could hear us. "How do you know if you don't try?" she asked me. I didn't answer her, but after a few moments of thinking, I had to admit that she was right. I promised to do everything I could to save my daughter, and Liam was the first and easiest option I could turn to. I stepped toward Cecilia and gently caressed her pale face. "Don't worry, baby. Mummy will do everything to save you," I said.
