THIRD PERSON
“Thank you for the lunch”, Kendra said to James as he stepped down from the driver’s seat handing her car key to her as she also came down. “It’s nothing”, he said and leaned in for a hug. She stood there and watched him enter a private car, he probably ordered it.
She sighed heavily as she waved a goodbye to him and walked slowly into the house. The door was open. She thought she had locked it when she was leaving. “Rona must be back early”, she said to herself.
She dropped her car key on the kitchen counter and went upstairs.
“What the actual f**k?”, she said with her jaw dropping.
“I’m sorry... I was moody and I didn’t know when it happened”, Rona said dropping the cigarettes on the floor.
“You’re smoking again”, Kendra said still surprised. “I thought you said you were clean”.
“I swear to God. I have been clean these past years”, She said pleading with Kendra.
“Just drop it! This is how Jojo got cancer, do you want to die?”, Kendra screamed.
“If you hadn’t kissed me, I wouldn’t have smoked again”, Rona yelled back.
“Oh... so I’m the one to blame now”, Kendra hissed and left the room.
“You can go to hell”, Rona screamed and hit her head against the wall. She picked up the cigarettes and took it to the bathroom to sprinkle some water on it before putting it in the trash bin.
She had messed up badly and she knew.
As for Kendra downstairs, she didn’t plan on apologizing to her because she thought she was the one who deserved the apology.
She washed her face with warm water and sat on the bed. She went to her wardrobe and picked a black coat and wore, she went downstairs and saw Kendra crying on the couch.
Kendra wiped her face with her face towel as she saw Rona approaching the sitting room.
“You’re gonna go get some cigarettes b***h?”, Kendra sniffed looking away from her.
“Actually, I’m just going for a walk and don’t expect me home anytime soon”, she said as she turned back to leave.
“Your boyfriend was here this morning”, Kendra said, watching Rona pause.
“He asked me about you which I told him that you weren’t home. Then he started sweet talking me. I slammed the door in his face if that makes you happy”, she said again, as she stood up from the couch.
“He wouldn’t do that to me”, Rona said crying.
“Believe it or not b***h”, Kendra said walking to the room, “I’m going to sleep. I have to be at work tomorrow”, she added as she climbed up the stairs.
Rona felt humiliated... She was angry at herself for dating such an i***t who would fall at the beauty of another woman. She was angry. She was broken.
She picked up her phone to place a quick call.(
(Phone rings... phone rings), “Hello sweetie”, a male voice came from the phone. It was Rodney.
“Don’t ever call me that”, she replied with anger in her voice. “Are you mad at me or something?”, he said with a low voice.
“How can you come to my house looking for me and seeing another woman, you jumped the horse”, Rona said.
He didn’t say anything. “After everything we’ve been through...”, “We have been through nothing Quinn”, he said with a straight loud voice.
She sobbed slightly. “You’re a monster and there is no difference from the Rodney that went to jail for beating his ex-girlfriend nearly half of death, and the Rodney I’m talking to right now”.
“I guess you won’t be talking to that monster anymore... Enjoy the rest of your year in heartbreak. Oh and by the way, you’re very sweet in bed, I enjoyed tasting every inch of you”, he said as he ended the call.
Rona through her phone across the room. She screamed very loud. She fell on her feet and cried.
She had just lost her virginity to this man two weeks they began dating. “Is everything okay?”, Kendra said rushing down the stairs. She pulled Rona into her arms and hugged her. “I’m very sorry, what happened?”.
“I just lost my virginity to the stupid man who you saw here this morning and now he broke up with me and... my life is ruined... Can I have a dose of Fentanyl? Check my cupboard”, she begged. “If you think I’m gonna let you take that thing so you can kill yourself, you’re out of your mind”, Kendra said pulling her very close again.
“I just wanna die”, Rona said as she cried bitterly.
“You’re not going to die Rona! Look at me okay”, Kendra said as she straightened her.
She hugged her for the last time and took her upstairs. She placed her gently on the bed and went back downstairs to prepare a toast bread and egg with hot tea, the weather was pretty cold.
She grabbed her phone from the floor and took it upstairs with the food. She put the tray on the bed and fed her bit by bit until she could take no more. Kendra ate the rest.
“You’ll be fine”, she assured.
“I’m sorry about the way I screamed at you”, Rona pleaded.
“It’s okay, I’m sorry too”, Kendra said, truly. “Now promise me you’ll never smoke again, please”.
“I cross my heart”, she said as she crossed her arms on her chest. Pinky swear.”
Kendra laid on the bed with her and covered them with the duvet. “You mentioned that you were going to work tomorrow”, Rona said, looking at Kendra’s face. “Yeah... you know I graduated from college with a first class in Computer science, (Rona nods in agreement), well I figured I should actually put it to good use. I got hired as a software engineer for Andela”, I concluded with a smile.
“Oh... congratulations baby”, She said as she pinched my cheeks and blushed.
Kendra yawned and wiped that last drop of tears from Rona’s eye. Before 10 minutes, the girls had slept off.
