The First Step

Maya’s eyes softened, a glimmer of relief crossing her face as Adrian’s resolve solidified. She released a breath she’d been holding, and a small, almost imperceptible smile played on her lips. “Thank you, Adrian. I was hoping you’d say that.” She reached into her bag, pulling out a small, worn notebook and placing it on the table between them. Adrian glanced at it, noticing the pages were filled with notes, scribbles, and hastily drawn symbols. It looked like something pulled from an investigator’s files, a glimpse into the mind of someone seeking answers to hidden questions. “This notebook has everything I’ve uncovered so far,” Maya said, her voice low. “It’s not complete, but it’s enough to get you started. There are names, places, and clues I’ve found. I want you to read it, but promise me you’ll keep it safe.” Adrian felt the weight of responsibility settle over him as he picked up the notebook, sensing that it held more than just information—it was a key to understanding the journey ahead. “I promise,” he whispered, his fingers brushing over the cover as he realized the first step had already been taken.
