Adrian sat at the small café table, his mind racing. Maya’s words about the lecture, which he couldn’t recall attending, lingered in his mind like a fog. How could he not remember something that had supposedly been the starting point for everything she was now telling him? His life, his carefully constructed routine, was being turned upside down.
“Maya,” Adrian began slowly, trying to make sense of it all. “You’re telling me that a lecture led you to this trail? But I don’t even remember going to one recently.”
Maya’s expression softened, her fingers nervously tracing the edge of her coffee cup. “I know. I thought you’d remember, but it’s not just any lecture, Adrian. It was more like an event—a signal. Something that set the pieces in motion. And I’ve been following it ever since.”
His heart began to race. Something felt off—like he was missing an important detail that could unravel the mystery. He glanced around the café, half-expecting someone to be watching them. But the world outside seemed blissfully unaware of the storm brewing within their conversation.
“I don’t understand,” Adrian whispered. “Why me?”
Maya locked eyes with him. “Because, Adrian, you’re part of this story. Whether you want to be or not.”
