I was literally starving. I didn’t understand why as I’ve been eating all day long. But somehow, I was never filled. Probably an after effect of sleeping for almost two days. I had a few meals to catch up with.
The night was upon us by the time I finished class. Time to call it a day. I planned on eating an outrageous amount of food before getting to bed. Maybe study a bit more as I struggled all day to focus. One thing was for sure: I should hurry as weather was quite cold tonight. I couldn’t afford to be sick. I needed to work and I needed to study no matter what. I said goodbye to my friends and started my way through campus to the parking lot. I wasn’t lazy but I wished that my building wasn’t that far from the entrance right now. Using a bike would be a good idea if I wasn’t living that far from campus. I could manage on typical days but on training days, I might end up dying, or close.
A shiver went down my spine. I turned around but met nothing but darkness. I had a strange feeling of déjà-vu. The campus was desert as it should be since it was past 22:00. My hunger was turning me paranoid. I decided to take a short cut through building instead of staying on the lighted path. It was creepier but faster. I still felt uneasy for no reason, feeling the urge of running to safety. What was wrong with me exactly ? Was I scared of the darkness ?
« Watch out ! »
The scream came from behind me
The scream came from behind me. I turned back to face the most terrifying creature I’ve ever seen. What the… It tried to reach out from me but something pinned it down. I’d rather say someone. He was tall and his body was obviously toned and muscular. His hair was combed backwards, revealing a pale face with sharp lines. His eyes shimmered with silver and he.just.punched.a.monster. I was having a nightmare. That was the only explanation. Someone grabbed my arm and pulled me back.
« Tommie ?! »
What was she doing here ?
« Oz and I will deal with this but you need to go. Now ! »
Was she being serious right now ?
« Tommie, it’s a monster ! We all need to go ! »
« We have everything under control », she said. « But we won’t be able to finish it off if you stay here. »
What was she babbling about ? Finish that thing off ? Couldn’t she see that it was dangerous ? Before I could say anything else, she pushed me down. A second later, something flew above my head. The tall guy. Tommie pulled a gun and started firing at that thing. The creature flinched but kept coming in our direction.
« Okey, we’re going all out then », she mumbled
Suddenly, her eyes turned vibrant lilac. Her hair was floating like she was out in space. Some kind of energy was giving goose bumps. I was petrified. What the hell was going on… The monster kept marching toward her, unimpressed. It was going to kill her. I needed to do something. At least buy her some time so she could escape. The monster crouched... it was about to jump on her ! Not thinking any longer, I tackled her to the floor as the thing charged.
« WHAT THE… »
A muffled noice flew in the air followed but an unreal scream. I could see a thing, I was to busy shielding Tommie with my body.
« Let go of me ! » she screamed, « You i***t ! I had it ! »
« It was going to kill you », I said back. « What could you possibly do ? »
« Much more than you could imagine. Now, please, before my friend get killed, move.your.ass ! »
She put so much threat in her words that I immediately jump on my feet.
« Look », she said, « I know this is all disturbing but you’re gonna have to trust on this, okey ? Do not interfere. »
I just shook my head and she pulled out a knife. She passed it across the palm of her hand and blood started flooding. Suddenly, I felt dizzy and… thirsty. Tommie didn’t pay attention to me. She was concentrating again. Her eyes were shiner than before.
« Now is the time to move, Oz ! » she shouted
A few grunting later and the man was back at her side. Tommie raised her arm and let out a huge ray of energy. Magic ? But I could old that thought. I was drifting away as sure as the monster was letting out its last scream, and its last breathe. I, on another hand, was struggling to get air through my lungs. My breath was hasty and my vision was narrowing. My hunger was over the moon and I’m pretty sure I’m the one who just grunted.
« Niall ? »
Tommie’s voice was unsure. Right now, she was my beacon in the dark, the one thing that got my walking.
« Are you okey ? », she insisted. « Oz, I think he is in shock. »
If the guy said something, I didn’t hear it. My all attention was focused on Tommies. All my energy was dedicated to closing the gap between us. She smelled so good. I reached softly for her bloody her hand and pressed it again my lips, tasting her blood. God, it was so sweet.
