The trap

1005 Words
It was nearly 8 p.m. when Kelvin arrived at the designated meeting point—an old cement factory site. The dimly lit area revealed a considerable number of parked cars outside, indicating the significance of the meeting. Kelvin couldn't help but notice the sizable entourage Mark Foley had brought along, triggering a moment of skepticism regarding his friend's level of trust in him. As Kelvin entered the meeting site, Mark Foley's expression softened with a rare smile, demonstrating a hint of warmth towards his old friend. "Welcome, my old friend. It's good to see you again," greeted Mark Foley in a cordial manner. Despite sensing a subtle undercurrent of animosity from Mark, Kelvin decided to maintain a facade of obliviousness. "It's good to see you too, my old friend," Kelvin reciprocated, striving to keep the atmosphere genial. Amidst the exchange of pleasantries, Kelvin couldn't help but address the elephant in the room, questioning Mark Foley's need for such a robust security detail. Mark Foley chuckled in response, clarifying that the men were merely his personal bodyguards, aiming to ensure his safety rather than imply distrust towards Kelvin. Kelvin raised an eyebrow before saying, "Well, I guess I should have brought more men." Mark Foley gestured to Kelvin, indicating that he need not worry about the number of men he brought because he had no intention of arming Kelvin. Kelvin secretly exchanged glances with his men, signaling for them to be on guard before taking his seat at the table. Mark Foley cleared his throat and said, "As you are aware, concerning the recent happenings in and around you, I just want to make it clear to you and Don Chavez that they were not my doing. Also, I am guessing that some of these happenings may have been linked to me by your informers. That is why we are here, to clarify things," Mark Foley concluded. Kelvin took his time to study everything that Mark Foley had said, observing even his body language. After taking a deep breath to steady himself, Kelvin replied, "So you are telling me that you were not involved in any of the attacks, not even in the least?" Shaking his head to indicate no, Mark Foley replied, "No, I wasn't, and neither were any of my men." Kelvin didn't say much but instead sighed exasperatedly. Suddenly, the sound of sirens could be heard coming from all directions. Kelvin's face became pale immediately, and he stared directly at Mark Foley, yelling, "You are trying to set me up by siding with the police!" Mark Foley was just as confused as Kelvin, but he managed to compose himself before saying, "I thought you were trying to set me up, but now you are accusing me of setting you up," concluded Mark. Both men's expressions became perplexed, as if they were trying to figure out the jinx in the puzzle. Their concentration was broken when one of Kelvin's men came running in, saying, "Boss, we have to go now before they surround us." Another man rushed in, saying, "It's too late, we are being surrounded as we speak," added the man. Kelvin thought for a moment before turning to face Mark Foley. "I'm guessing you chose this place for a reason," asked Kelvin. Mark Foley slowly nodded his head before saying, "Yes, I did." "And I'm guessing one of those reasons is for a quick getaway in case of an emergency?" Kelvin asked again. Mark nodded his head in response before asking Kelvin, "What are you insinuating?" Kelvin replied quickly and steadily, "Where is the secret escape route? I know you have one," concluded Kelvin. Mark Foley thought for a while before saying, "Are you asking me to show you my secret escape route because you're in trouble?" Kelvin was shocked by Mark Foley's remark and quickly yelled out, "You brought us here and now that we're in trouble, you're declining to help. Are you saying you're in league with the police?" concluded Kelvin. All of a sudden, the men around them were bringing out their guns and weapons, ready to strike at any moment. The situation around them was becoming unpredictable and it seemed that someone would have to pull the trigger first. Both Kelvin and Mark observed the tense atmosphere around them before Mark took a step forward to address the issue. "It's not that I don't trust you, Kelvin, but-" Mark trailed off before saying, "These secret tunnels are part of my underground network system. Revealing it to you now will expose all of my network. Do you understand the problem now?" concluded Mark Foley. "Well, if that's the case, you're going to risk us getting captured together because I'm not letting you leave here without my men," answered Kelvin. Mark did a double take before saying, "You all will have to wear blindfolds." Both Kelvin and his men immediately yelled out, "Never! That's not possible! Who knows if you're in league with the police just to try and deceive us? Now you want us to wear blindfolds to make it easier to get rid of us?" implied one of Kelvin's men. Mark Foley gazed intently at Kelvin, paying no heed to the murmurs from Kelvin's entourage. Kelvin deliberated for a moment before addressing Mark Foley. "You summoned us to this meeting, therefore it falls on you to devise a resolution to these issues. However, my men and I refuse to be uninformed and remain oblivious," Kelvin firmly stated. Mark Foley was caught off guard by Kelvin's bold declaration. He grappled with the daunting prospect of unveiling his clandestine operations to Kelvin if he acquiesced to reveal the concealed tunnels. With a firearm leveled at Mark Foley's head, Kelvin's voice reverberated with authority as he demanded, "Enough! Cease this futile delay. Either lead us through the tunnel immediately or face the consequence of our collective demise right this instant." The tension in the room intensified as the standoff reached a critical juncture, each man's resolve tested in the high-stakes confrontation.
