THE FIRST SHIFT

"Be careful, Omega. Very careful." Vanessa's poison words hung in the air and my daughter started to shake. Luna's tiny hands were suddenly covered in soft silver fur. Her pink nails elongated into black claws. Her golden eyes flooded white. "No," I dropped to knees. "No baby, not here. Breathe with Mommy." Too late. Too much Alpha pressure. Vanessa's pregnant Luna aura suffocating, Dominic's rage exploding, Leo's baby Alpha growl vibrating walls. Too much for four-year-old wolf. Luna arched. Whimper, then not human. Wolf pup. She was shifting. At four. In human tower. In front of guard and father's mistress. Not supposed to happen until twelve. "LEO! Get guard out!" I screamed, mask gone, just mother. Leo grabbed terrified guard and shoved him to door. "Go! You saw nothing!" Guard ran. Humans always think they hallucinated. Luna half-shifted, stuck, trembling between girl and wolf. Silver fur up arms, red tie choking. Crying, scared. "Mommy it hurts! Make it stop!" Dominic already on floor, huge body dwarfing hers, hands hovering, shaking, not knowing where to touch. "What do I do? Elena, what do I do!" Voice broken, panicked. Nothing like cold Alpha. Father watching pup suffer first time. "Help her finish! She's stuck scared! She needs father's Alpha calm! Not anger!" Dominic stared, then at Luna. Deep breath. Forced his raging wolf down. Gold dimmed. Aura changed from storm to warm blanket. "Luna," he whispered soft, so soft I barely recognized. Gently took tiny shaking hands in his huge ones. "Hey princess. Look at Daddy. Only Daddy." Daddy. He called himself Daddy. Luna's white eyes focused. "Good girl. So brave. Just like Mommy. Wolf scared because loud voices. But Daddy here now. No one hurt you. Promise. On my life." His Alpha voice wasn't commanding. It was lullaby only pups understand. Shaking slowed. Silver fur receded slightly. Still half-wolf but breathing. "That's my girl," Dominic murmured, tears in eyes, stroking hair. "You have my mother's fur. Silver. Rarest. Blessed, baby girl. Blessed Luna." At word blessed, Vanessa choked behind us. I looked up. Vanessa stared at Luna's silver patch, face white, clutching pregnant belly tight. "No," Vanessa whispered stepping back. "No no. That's impossible. Silver fur is mark of Blessed Luna prophecy. One every hundred years. She can't—" Dominic head snapped up, father mask dropping, gold flooding furious. "What did you say?" Vanessa realized too much. "Nothing! She's freak! Shifting at four, unstable! My mother said silver pups cursed, they bring—" "Get out," Dominic low, windows shook. "What?" "GET OUT OF MY TOWER!" He roared, standing, holding Luna against chest, her head on shoulder, finally calm, eyes closing exhausted. "DON'T EVER COME NEAR MY CHILDREN AGAIN!" Vanessa stumbled back, fake tears streaming. "Dominic! I'm carrying your legitimate heir! True heir! You can't— Our alliance— Father will pull funding—" "I don't care if your father pulls entire Silver Crest into ocean!" Dominic snarled, Leo stepped in front of me protective growling at Vanessa. "We had alliance because I thought I had no heirs. Because I thought Moon Goddess left me barren after I rejected true mate. Now I see I have two. Two perfect strong Alpha heirs with my blood. With silver blood." He looked down at Luna asleep in arms, then Leo glaring, then me. "Elena Rayne is mother of my children," he announced loud, Alpha command whole fiftieth floor heard. "She is under my protection. Her children under my protection. Anyone who touches them, threatens them, looks at them wrong— I will rip throat out myself. Even you, Vanessa." Vanessa face twisted pure hatred. Looked at me, Leo, Luna in his arms. "This isn't over, Omega," she hissed at me hand on belly. "You think you won because hid two bastards four years? My son born next month. True Alpha son, born in pack, blessed by elders. Not hidden in human hospitals like rats. We will see who pack chooses." She stormed out, slamming door picture fell. Silence. Dominic still holding Luna, now fully human again, asleep exhausted silver streak hidden. Leo still holding my hand. Then Dominic did something never expected. Walked to me, Luna in arms, and knelt again. Not forced. Chose. "Elena," whispered looking up, tears on lashes, Luna head on shoulder. "I know you hate me. You should. I rejected you when you carried my children. Called you weak when you were strongest wolf I ever knew. No right to ask anything." Swallowed. "But please. Let me know them. Let me protect them. Just tonight. Let them sleep in real pack house, not human apartment where you hide shift. One night. Please." Leo looked up. "Mommy? Is he... is he really our Daddy? The one who died?" Heart broke. Luna stirred in Dominic's arms mumbled sleepily, "Daddy smells like home." I spent five years building empire to make Dominic kneel. Now kneeling holding my daughter asking to be father. And Vanessa threatened to make children disappear. If I said no, alone against Silver Crest. If yes, back in his world. In his house. In his bed. Phone buzzed. Unknown number. Picture message. Luna and Leo at grocery store this morning, taken far away. Red cross over faces. Text: Accidents disappear, Omega. Tonight. -V Vanessa. Hands shook. Dominic saw photo over shoulder. Body rigid. Gold eyes turned black rage. Air ice cold. "Who sent that?" growled dangerous Leo stepped back. I showed him. Dominic stared three seconds. Then howled. True Alpha howl of war so loud entire Blackwood Tower heard fifty floors down. Call every warrior Manhattan. "LOCK DOWN TOWER!" he roared into pack link, shaking building. "NO ONE LEAVES! FIND VANESSA CROFT! NOW!" Looked at me, Luna asleep in arms, Leo clinging leg, face no longer billionaire CEO. It was Alpha who lost mate and pups and just found them. Someone threatened to kill them. "Elena," he said deadly eyes black promise murder. "I'm taking you and my children home. To Blackwood Manor. Tonight. And if anyone tries stop us—" Elevator dinged. Doors opened. Ten Blackwood warriors in black suits walked out, heads bowed to Dominic but eyes on me and twins sniffing shocked. "Alpha," lead warrior whispered staring Leo's golden eyes. "Is it true? Are they—" "My heirs," Dominic said holding Luna tighter. "My blood. My blessed pups. Anyone who touches them dies." Looked at me last time begging commanding broken. "Come home with me, Elena? Please?" Before I could answer lights entire tower went out. Blackout. Luna screamed again but not from shift. From pain. Body burning hot. "She's burning up!" I screamed touching forehead. "Burning!" Dominic touched too and jerked back like burned. "Silver fever," he whispered horrified. "Only Blessed Lunas get it. Kills pups if not treated with pack herbs in two hours. We don't have herbs here." Leo grabbed my hand crying now too. "Mommy I'm scared! Luna hot!" In dark with daughter dying in father's arms, assassins possibly in tower, Vanessa threat fresh, ten warriors watching— Dominic looked at me and said three words I never thought hear from him again. "Be my Luna. Again. Come home and let me save our daughter. Please, Elena, before we lose her like I lost you." And Luna stopped breathing. I remembered giving birth alone in St. Mary's human hospital while Dominic was on Forbes cover with Vanessa. No pack healer chanted. No Luna mother held hand. Just cold metal and nurse saying push. Lira almost dead from rejection, whimpering. I bled so much they thought I would die. But then two cries, weak but alive, and my world changed. I named them there, blood on thighs, no father whispering names. Leo because he roared at birth. Luna because she looked at moon through window and stopped crying. I remembered nights after — three jobs, waitressing, translation gigs, building Rayne Industries from kitchen while twins slept in cardboard box crib because couldn't afford real one. Hiding Luna's tail at two months when excited watching cartoons, stuffing into pants, telling neighbors costume. Dominic never knew, never searched enough. Now he held her while she burned. Warriors formed circle, growling low, protecting, smelling blessed silver blood first time in century. Beta Thomas knelt, tears old eyes, whispering Blessed Luna returned. Prophecy true. Dominic held Luna tighter, tears falling on burning fur sizzling. Leo climbed into my lap shaking, golden eyes glowing fear and rage, baby wolf howling for sister. I looked at dying daughter in his arms and knew only one choice left to save her life tonight. I would have to go back to pack that rejected me, to house that broke me, to Alpha who destroyed me, and become Luna again even if it killed me inside. Because Luna's life mattered more than revenge. More than pride. More than everything I built. My daughter's breath was worth my hate. Dominic's warriors howled with him, chorus of war and protection and prophecy. And in that dark tower, with power out and daughter dying, I whispered yes through tears tonight.
