THE WARNING HOWL

1129 Words
Zara woke to silence. Not the gentle kind that came with sleep or peace, but the sharp, alert quiet that made her chest tighten before she even opened her eyes. The air felt heavier, like the forest itself was holding its breath. Her first instinct was to reach out. The bond answered immediately. Warm. Steady. Present. Relief washed through her as she felt him—strong, unyielding, wrapped around her awareness like an invisible shield. The Alpha was nearby. Awake. Watching. Only then did she dare to open her eyes. She wasn’t in the room she’d been given when she first arrived at the pack compound. This one was larger, darker, carved deeper into the mountain stone. Thick wooden beams lined the ceiling, etched with symbols she didn’t recognize. The scent of pine, smoke, and something distinctly male filled the space. Him. She pushed herself upright slowly, the blanket sliding down her shoulders. Her body felt… different. Not weak. Not sore. Just aware, like every nerve had been tuned too sharply. Memories rushed back. The mark. The way his teeth had broken her skin—not with pain, but with something terrifyingly intimate. The way the bond had snapped into place like fate tightening a knot. A soft knock sounded at the door. Before Zara could answer, it opened. Nyra stepped inside. The female wolf’s pale eyes flicked over Zara with an intensity that made her stomach twist. There was no warmth in her gaze. Only calculation. “You’re awake,” Nyra said flatly. “I guess I am,” Zara replied, pulling the blanket tighter around herself. Nyra’s lips curved, but it wasn’t a smile. “The Alpha ordered you not to leave this room.” Zara stiffened. “Why?” “Because the pack is restless,” Nyra said. “And because you’re… exposed.” The word crawled over Zara’s skin. “I thought the mark was supposed to protect me,” she said quietly. Nyra laughed under her breath. “It does. From some things.” She turned toward the door. “Stay here.” The door shut behind her with a heavy finality. Zara exhaled slowly. So much for feeling safe. ⸻ The howl came just after dusk. It ripped through the forest like a blade, sharp and furious, carrying power that made the walls tremble. Zara gasped, clutching the edge of the bed as the sound slammed into her chest—not through her ears, but through the bond. Her heart pounded in answer, fear and something darker curling together in her veins. That wasn’t from the pack. She knew that instinctively. The door burst open. The Alpha stood there, eyes glowing faintly in the low light, his body already coiled with lethal readiness. He crossed the room in three long strides and dropped to one knee in front of her. “Are you hurt?” he demanded. She shook her head. “What was that?” His jaw tightened. “A warning.” Another howl answered the first, closer this time. More aggressive. Zara’s breath hitched. “Warning from who?” He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, his hand came up, hovering near the mark at her throat without touching it. The air between them hummed. “Rogues,” he said finally. “And not just any rogues.” Her stomach sank. “You said they don’t come near packs.” “They don’t,” he agreed grimly. “Unless there’s something worth risking death for.” The bond flared hot, pain lancing suddenly through Zara’s chest. She cried out, fingers digging into the mattress as her body arched involuntarily. The Alpha cursed and caught her shoulders. “Zara.” It burned. Not like fire—but like pressure, like something trying to force its way through the bond. “What’s happening to me?” she whispered. His eyes darkened. “They’re testing the connection.” Her vision blurred. “Testing how?” “To see if it can be broken.” Another howl split the air—closer still. The Alpha surged to his feet and turned toward the door, barking orders into the hall. Wolves answered instantly, the sound of movement echoing through stone and wood. He turned back to her, expression fierce and unyielding. “Listen to me carefully. No matter what you hear tonight, you do not leave this room.” Fear wrapped around her heart. “You’re going to fight them.” “Yes.” “What if you get hurt?” His gaze softened, just for a heartbeat. “I won’t.” The confidence in his voice was absolute. But the bond trembled. ⸻ The pack gathered in the central clearing, tension crackling like electricity. Zara watched from the doorway as the Alpha took his place at the center, towering over the others. Wolves shifted uneasily, some glancing back at her with open hostility. “She doesn’t belong here.” The voice came from Lysa—a tall, dark-haired female with sharp eyes and a scar across her cheek. “She’s human,” Lysa continued. “And now the rogues are circling because of her.” A murmur of agreement rippled through the pack. Zara swallowed, fingers curling into fists. The Alpha didn’t turn. “Speak again,” he said calmly, “and you will regret it.” Lysa stiffened but held her ground. “You’re risking all of us.” He turned then, eyes blazing. “I am protecting what is mine.” The words sent a shiver through Zara, equal parts comfort and terror. Nyra stepped forward, voice measured. “The rogues haven’t crossed the boundary yet.” “Yet,” the Alpha echoed. Another howl echoed through the trees—this one mocking. Zara felt the bond flare violently. She cried out, dropping to her knees as pain tore through her chest. The mark burned, heat spreading like poison through her veins. The Alpha was at her side instantly. “Enough,” he snarled, voice carrying across the clearing. “Show yourself.” The forest answered with silence. Then a figure stepped from the shadows. Tall. Lean. Smiling. Not pack. Not rogue in the wild sense. This wolf walked like he belonged somewhere dangerous. “Well,” the stranger said smoothly, eyes flicking to Zara. “So the rumors were true.” The Alpha rose slowly, placing himself between them. “Leave.” The stranger chuckled. “You marked a human. Bold.” Zara’s pulse roared in her ears. The stranger’s gaze met hers. “You shouldn’t have survived the bond.” The pain exploded. Zara screamed as her body collapsed, darkness swallowing her vision. The last thing she felt was the Alpha’s roar—raw, furious, and afraid—as the world went black.
