After the howl faded into the distance, silence fell—thick and suffocating.
Zara realized her hands were shaking.
“Was that… normal?” she asked, though something deep inside her already knew the answer.
The Alpha didn’t look at her immediately. His gaze remained fixed on the door, his entire body tense, shoulders squared like he was preparing for a fight.
“No,” he said. “That was a warning.”
“A warning from who?”
“Someone who wants the pack to know they are close enough to strike.”
Zara’s stomach dropped. “Strike who?”
His eyes finally met hers.
“You.”
The word hit harder than she expected. Zara let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding, her chest tight as fear crawled up her spine.
“But I haven’t done anything,” she said weakly.
“That doesn’t matter,” he replied. “Your existence is enough.”
She hugged her arms around herself, suddenly aware of how exposed she felt—human, fragile, marked by a world she didn’t understand. “So what happens now?”
“Now,” he said, stepping closer, “you are never alone.”
The intensity in his voice sent a strange ripple through her chest. The bond responded instantly, warmth spreading outward from the mark, curling through her veins like liquid fire. Zara gasped softly, pressing her palm over her heart.
“What is that?” she whispered.
He noticed immediately. “The bond is settling.”
“It feels like it’s… listening.”
“That’s because it is.”
She looked up at him sharply. “Listening to what?”
“To you. To me. To danger.”
That did not help her panic.
A knock interrupted them again—this time sharp, urgent.
Before Zara could react, the door opened and Nyra entered, her usual composed expression fractured by alarm.
“Alpha,” she said quickly. “The outer perimeter has been breached.”
Zara’s heart slammed against her ribs. “Breached? By who?”
Nyra’s gaze flicked to her, something unreadable passing through her eyes. “We don’t know yet. But the wards reacted to her presence.”
Zara stiffened. “My presence?”
Nyra nodded once. “They’re tracking the mark.”
The Alpha cursed under his breath, a low, dangerous sound. “Move her.”
Nyra hesitated. “There is disagreement among the elders.”
Zara blinked. “About what?”
“About whether keeping you here endangers the entire pack.”
The words felt like a slap.
“So what,” Zara said quietly, “some of them want me gone?”
Nyra didn’t answer.
The Alpha’s eyes darkened. “They will not touch her.”
“But they are afraid,” Nyra said. “And fear makes wolves cruel.”
Zara swallowed, throat tight. “I don’t want to cause trouble.”
“You are not trouble,” the Alpha said sharply. “You are mine.”
The possessiveness in his tone sent another rush through the bond—stronger this time. Zara staggered slightly, the sensation overwhelming, like standing too close to a live wire.
He caught her instantly, hands steadying her shoulders.
“Easy,” he murmured. “You’re overstimulated.”
“I feel like I’m… unraveling,” she admitted, breathless.
Nyra stepped closer, studying her intently. “She’s adapting faster than expected.”
“That’s not possible,” the Alpha said.
Nyra’s voice lowered. “Unless she was never meant to be ordinary.”
Zara’s blood ran cold. “What does that mean?”
Nyra straightened. “It means the elders were right to be afraid.”
Before Zara could press further, a sudden sharp pain exploded in her chest—far worse than before. She cried out, knees buckling as fire ripped through the bond, raw and brutal.
The Alpha growled, the sound vibrating through the room. “Someone has crossed the boundary.”
Zara clutched his arm desperately. “I can feel it. Someone is hurt.”
His jaw tightened. “So can I.”
Nyra’s eyes widened. “Alpha—your bloodline guard—”
“I know,” he snapped. “They’re attacking the inner ring.”
Zara’s vision blurred as another wave of pain surged through her, foreign fear flooding her senses—panic that wasn’t hers.
“Why do I feel this?” she gasped.
“Because they’re close enough for the bond to echo it,” he said grimly.
Nyra backed toward the door. “We need to move her. Now.”
The Alpha hesitated for half a second—then nodded. “Take her to the lower chambers.”
Nyra reached for Zara’s arm.
The moment her fingers touched Zara’s skin, the bond flared violently.
Zara screamed.
Nyra was thrown backward as if struck, crashing into the wall with a grunt. Zara collapsed to the floor, gasping, her entire body shaking as heat and pain tore through her veins.
“No one touches her,” the Alpha roared.
He dropped to his knees beside Zara, pulling her against his chest. The contact steadied her slightly, the pain dulling just enough for her to breathe.
“What’s happening to me?” she sobbed.
His arms tightened around her. “The bond is rejecting anyone who means you harm.”
Nyra stared at them in shock. “That kind of reaction shouldn’t be possible—not in a human.”
Zara looked up at him, fear and confusion flooding her eyes. “What aren’t you telling me?”
Before he could answer, a deep, unfamiliar voice echoed through the corridor outside—cold, amused, and powerful.
“So this is her,” the voice drawled. “The human who broke the rules.”
The Alpha’s body went rigid.
Zara’s heart slammed violently against her ribs.
The voice continued, closer now.
“I’ve come to collect what belongs to me.”
The Alpha slowly rose to his feet, placing himself between Zara and the door, every inch of him radiating lethal intent.
“She is not yours,” he growled.
A soft chuckle echoed back.
“We’ll see.”
The door creaked open.
