What he heard

1082 Words
The space between them was small, too small for comfort, yet neither of them moved. Ivy’s body felt impossibly light in Adrian’s arms, like she had already slipped halfway out of herself. Her head rested against his chest, her hair brushing his jaw as he adjusted his hold without thinking, one arm tightening around her shoulders, the other supporting her knees. She did not stir. Her breathing was shallow, uneven, every breath sounding like it cost her effort. Around them, the classroom had dissolved into noise. Someone shouted her name again. Another voice called for water. Chairs scraped loudly against the floor as students backed away, panic spreading faster than sense. Mia’s face was pale, her hands shaking as she hovered close, afraid to touch Ivy but afraid not to. “She fainted,” someone said. “No, she collapsed,” another corrected. Adrian ignored them all. He turned sharply and moved, pushing through the crowd with purpose. His presence cut through the chaos without him saying a word. People stepped aside instinctively, clearing a path as he carried Ivy out of the room and into the hallway. Her weight shifted suddenly. She gasped softly, fingers curling weakly into the fabric of his shirt. That sound stopped him. Adrian glanced down at her face, and the first thing that struck him was how beautiful she was, even like this. Her skin was pale, too pale, as if all the strength had been drained out of her, but her features were soft and striking. Long lashes rested against her cheeks, trembling faintly as her eyes fluttered, and her lips, though dry and slightly parted, were naturally full and feminine. She looked exhausted. Like someone who had been fighting quietly for far too long. “Stay with me,” he said quietly, not realizing he had spoken out loud. She did not respond. By the time they reached the parking lot, Mia was crying openly, struggling to keep up. The driver was already there, door opened, eye sharp and alert, reacting instantly to Adrian's presence. Adrian didn’t speak as he lifted her carefully into the back seat, supporting her head, making sure her airway was clear. “Hospital,” Adrian said, voice low and firm. The car was moving before the door fully closed. The ride to the hospital felt too long, every red light irritated him, every second felt unnecessary. When they arrived, nurses rushed forward the moment they saw Ivy’s condition. “She fainted during class,” Adrian explained calmly as they transferred her onto a stretcher. “She hasn’t fully regained consciousness.” Mia tried to speak, but the words tangled in her throat. “We’ll take it from here,” a nurse said firmly, already moving Ivy down the corridor. Adrian followed without hesitation. No one questioned him. The hospital room was small and functional, filled with quiet beeping sounds and the low hum of machines. Ivy lay still on the bed as nurses checked her vitals, clipped monitors to her finger, adjusted the IV line sliding into her arm. Adrian stood near the foot of the bed, hands in his pockets, jaw tight. He told himself he was calm. He was not. A nurse glanced between Ivy and Adrian, then smiled politely. “Is he your boyfriend?” The question was casual. Thoughtless. “Yes,” Mia blurted before Adrian could answer, desperate for someone to take Ivy seriously. The nurse nodded and turned back to her chart. “That explains why she’s been pushing herself this hard.” Adrian’s attention sharpened. “What do you mean?” he asked. The nurse looked up, surprised but not cautious. “She’s severely malnourished. Her blood pressure is low, her sugar levels are unstable, and based on her labs, she’s been running on empty for weeks, maybe longer. Stress like this can shut the body down completely.” Adrian felt something cold settle in his chest. “She hasn’t been eating properly,” the nurse continued. “And there are signs of chronic exhaustion. This wasn’t sudden. Her body just couldn’t keep compensating.” Mia covered her mouth. Adrian stared at Ivy. She looked smaller now. Fragile in a way that did not match the strength he had already seen in her. When Ivy finally woke, it was slow. Her eyes opened slightly, unfocused at first, confusion clouding her face as she shifted against the pillow. Her breathing hitched when she realized where she was. “Easy,” the nurse said gently. “You’re in the hospital.” Ivy swallowed, her throat dry. “I… I’m fine,” she whispered automatically. Adrian heard it. Not denial. Habit. Mia rushed to her side. “You scared me,” she said, voice breaking. “You fainted.” Ivy frowned weakly, then winced as the memory returned. “I didn’t mean to,” she said, as if it were something she could control. Adrian said nothing. He watched her apologize for being sick. The doctor arrived not long after, explaining the situation more firmly. Ivy needed rest. Proper nutrition. Reduced stress. Continued strain could trigger more severe complications, including organ damage if ignored. Ivy nodded through it all, eyes lowered. When they were finally left alone, the silence pressed in. Mia wiped her eyes. “I’ll go talk to the front desk,” she said quietly, giving Adrian a look that said thank you without words. The door closed behind her. Adrian stepped closer to the bed. Ivy sensed him before she saw him. Her gaze lifted, recognition flickering across her face, followed immediately by embarrassment. “You,” she murmured. “Yes,” he replied. She shifted uncomfortably. “I’m sorry you had to… see this.” He frowned slightly. “Why are you apologizing?” She hesitated, then shrugged weakly. “I don’t like people worrying about me.” “That’s unfortunate,” he said, calm but firm. “Because you’re giving them reasons to.” She looked away. He studied her for a long moment before speaking again. “You push yourself too hard.” “You don’t know that,” she replied softly. “I know enough,” he said. Silence stretched between them. Ivy finally whispered, “I’ll be fine.” He did not argue. But he did not believe her either. As he stepped back, preparing to leave, Adrian realized something unsettling. This was no longer curiosity. This was concern. And concern, once awakened, did not fade easily.
