Chapter 4

I still waited for him to reply, attempting to ease the maelstrom of ideas raging inside me when, at last, she said: "I came to Willow Creek to escape all that, Ava. To discover something authentic, something that isn't power or inheritance based. That's why I found that. with you." Ethan's eyes locked onto mine, his statement a heavy confession floating in the silence. Why are you telling me this now?" I asked, my voice cracking. The storm I had been trying to keep at bay was on the verge of breaking loose. "Why didn't you tell me from the beginning? Why make me fall for you, then drop this bombshell on me?" I struggled against the tears welling up in my chest, not wanting to appear weak, especially now. "I didn't mean to hurt you," Ethan spoke softly, his tone laced with regret. "I didn't intend to hurt you. But I didn't know how to say it, or if I could at all. But this isn't something temporary. I want to be with you, but my family won't let me get away that easily." He gave a bitter laugh, one I didn't anticipate. It was razor-sharp and jagged and unlike him. I had desired peace in my life, a sense of calm. But now I was wrapped up in something far greater than I could ever have imagined—a conflict not only between him and me, but between his realm and mine. I sat back in my chair, allowing the full impact of his words to envelop me. Gradually, the truth of the situation began to permeate. This was not some easy relationship. This was about legacy, power, and control of the family. This was about a man being caught between the love for me and his responsibility to his family, something much more complex than I had anticipated. "So, you're saying that if we attempt to be together, they'll shut us down?" I whispered, my voice almost inaudible. Ethan hesitated for a second, glancing away before looking down at his hands as if he were trying to find the words. "Yeah, well," he whispered. "That's my dad. He's already arranged everything for me to marry the person he's picked out. Someone who suits the family agenda. I don't know how to get out of it. And I don't want to bring you into that world, Ava." The silence between us was oppressive, like a heaviness that was weighing down on my chest. I could sense the tension in the air, the constriction in my throat as I attempted to make sense of what he had just uttered. My mind was a whirlwind, turning faster and faster, seeking sense, but I couldn't make sense of anything. I breathed deeply, attempting to calm myself. "I don't know what to tell you," I confessed, my voice shaking. "This is just so. overwhelming. I thought we had something real, something that was just about us, but now it feels like I'm in a game that I didn't sign up for." I don't want to rush you," Ethan said, his tone easing. "I know it's a lot to process, but I needed to be honest with you. I'm not leaving. I want to work through this with you, even if it takes a while. I stared at him, my heart full of things I didn't know what to do with. Ethan wasn't just some rich boy trying to get out of doing what was expected of him. He was a man who cared about me, who would fight his family for what was right. And that realization had the situation both frightening and hopelessly up in the air at the same time. "This is a disaster," I managed at last, my voice almost a whisper. "But I don't want to lose what we have. Not because of what you've said about your father." Ethan's eyes relaxed, and a small, relieved smile crossed his face. He tightened his fingers around mine, his touch warm and reassuring. "That's all I can hope for," he replied, his voice heavy with quiet gratitude. Just as I was trying to wrap my head around the moment, I heard Lily's voice pierce through it. "Ava… Ava!" she yelled loudly, surprising me. I blinked, remembering that I had totally forgotten that Lily had been waiting for her order. She had been standing there for a bit, looking visibly impatient. I turned towards her, surprised by the abrupt interruption. "Something is wrong with you? I've been trying to reach you for some time now, you b***h?" Lily spoke mockingly. I did not respond to her. Instead, I concentrated on taking her order, trying to return to the routine that was comforting and secure. I didn't take her jokes, but once I prepared her order and handed it over, I looked at her as I collected her payment. She was still there, unmoving. Rather than sit down, she simply stood there, gazing at me, awaiting more. "I was just thinking something," I replied, folding my arms, attempting to shake off the burden of the talk with Ethan. "About what? Perhaps I can assist," Lily replied teasingly, her voice tinged with interest. "It's regarding the stranger I informed you about…" I started to say, but Lily cut me off with her characteristic melodrama. "Why? Did he touch you? Did he steal from you? Tell me!" she demanded, her eyes bulging with worry. No! You're being melodramatic," I said, rolling my eyes. "It's just that he told me everything." "No way! He's the guy who told you he assisted you because of your stupidity?" she asked with a mischievous smile. I shot her a pointed stare, but soon enough, I exhaled and succumbed. "OMG! Your knight in shining armor is arriving!" she exclaimed, taking something from beside the bulletin board and skipping out the door. That's when I first saw Ethan walk into the coffee shop. His arrival instantly altered the dynamics of the room, the heavy presence of his unspoken mind floating in the air like a storm cloud. "Good morning," he greeted softly. "Good morning," I said, trying to sound as normal as possible as I began to prepare his drink. "Have you considered it?" he said, his tone low and sincere. I didn't respond right away, rather concentrating on what I was doing, not wanting to speak too soon. I eventually finished preparing his drink and handed it over to him with a smile, which felt stiff. "Here's your order," I told him, trying to keep the residual tension in the air from being apparent. "So, what are you thinking?" he asked, remaining at the counter, his eyes scanning mine for a response. "Nothing," I told him quietly, continuing to wipe down the counter in an effort to sidestep the conversation for just a bit longer. But I had turned to walk away when I felt my waist being softly pulled towards a warm familiarity. My heart racing, I whirled back around to find Ethan standing close behind me, his arms wrapped tightly around me. "Ethan…" I whispered, struggling to get the words out. He said nothing. His eyes grew dark with feeling instead, and before I could react, he leaned forward and took my lips in a kiss. It was slow, measured, as if he were feeling the waters to see how I would respond. My body leaned into his, naturally reacting as his hands went around my waist, tugging me towards him. The kiss grew deeper, and the warmth between us grew stronger with each passing second. His lips were gentle, yet commanding, as if he was investing every unspoken word into that single prolonging second. I answered in the same vein, my fingers traveling up to his chest, where I could feel the slow thud of his heart against the fabric of his shirt. It wasn't a kiss—it was a promise, a vow that we were ready to move to the next place, whatever it was to us. When we finally broke apart, both of us gasping for air, the air heavy with tension. My hands shook minutely as I brushed my lips, feeling the heat of his kiss still lingering. We hung there for a long time, neither of us willing to shatter the magic that had been formed between us. As the night approached, the world outside receded into the distance, as if it no longer mattered. But reality was still out there, waiting for us to confront it. And we would—together.
