20Number 3 ACCS Nine Elms, Poperinghe, Saturday, 24 November 1917 The home sister met Lucy as she walked across to the nurses’ mess. ‘You have a visitor. He was asking how he could find you, but when I told him men weren’t allowed in the nurses’ quarters he looked so disappointed I took him to the kitchen.’ ‘Who is it, Maud?’ Lucy asked. She wasn’t in the mood for socialising, but she was becoming curious. The home sister had said ‘he’, but she couldn’t think of anyone… unless John Mitchell had come over from the lines for some reason. ‘I never thought to ask,’ Maud said. That’s strange, Lucy thought.
