CRACKS IN THE ARMOUR

359 Words
Rain was already streaking across the windows when the car pulled up to Ciara’s apartment building. They hadn’t spoken since leaving the Adams estate, but the silence wasn’t awkward—it was heavy, almost charged. “Thanks for… earlier,” she said quietly, unbuckling her seatbelt. Jubril’s gaze lingered on her profile. “You don’t have to thank me for telling the truth.” Her laugh was soft but edged. “You say that like truth is always easy.” “It’s easier than watching my father disrespect you.” The way he said it—calm, deliberate—made something warm and unsteady bloom in her chest. She reached for the door handle, but his hand shot out, fingers brushing her wrist. “Ciara,” he said, voice low enough that the sound of the rain almost swallowed it. She froze, looking at him. “You held your own tonight,” he continued. “Most people fold when he tests them. You didn’t.” “That’s because I didn’t grow up trying to please your father,” she said, half-smiling. “I grew up learning to stand my ground.” For a moment, they simply looked at each other. No pretending. No lines rehearsed for an audience. Just… them. Something shifted. Her pulse quickened, not because of what he was saying, but because of the way he was looking at her—like he was seeing someone he hadn’t expected. The air between them tightened, pulling them closer until the space felt too small. She was suddenly aware of the steady rhythm of his breathing, the warmth radiating from him, the way his eyes flicked to her lips before darting back to her gaze. It would have been so easy—dangerously easy—to close that last inch. But then, as if remembering every rule they’d made, Jubril exhaled sharply and let go of her wrist. “Goodnight, Ciara,” he said, his voice a fraction rougher than before. She stepped out into the rain, heart pounding, wondering why it felt less like an ending and more like the start of something neither of them could control.
