Apparently, God wasn't willing and the creek was flooded because Raine had made absolutely no progress on the mine story in the past week. I hadn't dared to reach out to Tahir in all that time either, which was probably why I was in such an absolutely miserable state. I couldn't sleep through the night. I woke up feeling overheated with the ghost of a touch lingering on my skin. I tried melatonin, a white noise machine, and copious amounts of wine, but nothing helped me sleep. I felt like I was going through some kind of withdrawal. It was ridiculous. I was nursing my third coffee of the morning as I gazed boredly out the window of Ruben's car.
