The next morning, I opened my eyes thinking somehow I’d magically been transported from my apartment in Tampa into a palace in the middle of the night. After I blinked, my eyes open and shut, I remembered the events of the day before, flying to Dallas, and moving into this amazing house of Alison’s. I got out of bed, and walked into the bathroom, catching myself in the mirror framed with flowers and greenery. I looked at my messy dull dark brown hair in my reflection. Even after shedding 150lbs, I still didn’t feel like a babe. In fact, I’d grown so comfortable in my identity as a plus-sized woman, being skinny felt like I was less than before. I was just a plain jane.
I slipped off my navy cotton pajama shorts, and grey college t-shirt, observing the difference in my body. I never had hips or a butt, even when I was bigger, but now they are even smaller. All my weight had been carried in my stomach and chest. My breasts had shrunk and my stomach still had a little pooch. People constantly congratulated me on my weight loss, but I didn’t really feel like I’d achieved anything worth being congratulated on. Don’t get me wrong. 150lbs is a lot, but I just ate when I was hungry and stopped eating when I was full…which didn’t require a lot of food thanks to the surgery.
I went back into the bedroom and pulled out my shower supplies from my suitcase. As I walked back into the bathroom I couldn’t help but glance at the giant heart-shaped hot tub. I smiled to myself, thinking I would definitely have to try it out at least once before I get a place of my own. It looked like it would hold a lot of water. There was no doubt 2 people could comfortably fit in the tub. Alison would probably be thrilled if I found someone to share a bath in it with. We would see. I was starting a whole new life. Anything was possible.
After my shower, I dried my hair and pulled it into a ponytail. My outfit consisted of a pair of denim shorts, a floral tank top, and a denim button-up shirt that I left unbuttoned. I walked out into the…well, I’m not sure what you would call it considering the house was made to look like anything but a house. I was able to see the kitchen, with Alison standing at the counter with a container of muffins.
“Good morning sleeping beauty!” She said in her energetic voice. Her red hair was perfectly curled, and she wore a yellow sundress. Her makeup was freshly done. “I’m so glad you’re awake, I have to run out for a brunch date, but I wanted to make sure you were settled before I headed out.” I grabbed a muffin and tore it in half, knowing I wouldn’t be able to finish the whole thing.
“No worries, I figured I’d go do some apartment hunting today.”
“Okay, well, let me loan you my car so you can get around.” Alison’s bedroom door was right outside the kitchen. She reached in the doorway and pulled out a set of keys.
“Oh no, you don’t have to give me your car.”
“It’s fine. Bill is sending an Uber to pick me up for brunch. He’ll make sure I get home. Follow me.” Ali led me into the garage, flicked on the light, and walked around to the driver's side of a Barbie pink BMW. She opened the door and pulled something out. “Here’s the garage door opener. Just be sure you close the garage door when you leave and get back.”
“Ali…I can’t drive this car.”
“Why not? You don’t like the color?”
“I love the color, but…it’s a custom BMW.” Ali laughed.
“I trust you.” She said. “The car has insurance, so it’s fine. You’re going to end up spending way more money than it’s worth if you try to get an Uber to come out here and take you apartment hunting in the city.”
I really didn’t want to argue, as I had budgeted for myself only a couple thousand dollars to spend for the next few weeks until I could get my own apartment and all my belongings from Tampa here. At the same time, though, I wasn’t sure if I trusted myself in such a luxurious vehicle.
“I’ll think about it,” I said. Alison defiantly put the keys in my hand.
“Okay, you THINK about it.” she winked at me. I looked at the BMW logo on the key.
“Ali, what do you do?”
“What do you mean?” She asked.
“I mean, a house, a BMW…did you win the lottery or something?” Alison smiled sheepishly as she grabbed her purse off the chaise lounge and pulled on her chunky sandal heels.
“Not exactly. I have what you might call, sponsors.”
“Sponsors?” I repeated, confused. “Like modeling sponsors?”
“Yeah. They support me and my brand.” She made her way to the front door.
“What’s your brand?” I asked. She turned around and curtseyed.
“This,” she said, waving her arm in front of her body. “Now, my ride is here, so I’ll see you later. Be safe, and take the BMW.” And with a flourish, she was out the door.
I continued to slowly eat my muffin and look around the rest of the house. All the rooms were so cool. The kitchen was styled like an old-school 1950’s kitchen with blue and white tiles, blue cabinets, and a vintage blue fridge. The entryway was black and gold, and the foyer was pink, with ornate molding in white. The floor was marble, and the ceiling had a giant crystal chandelier. It was furnished with a vintage ornate couch, a chaise lounge, and a baby grand piano. There was a makeshift hallway between the foyer and what I assume was initially intended to be the dining room. It was outlined by multiple rounded arches that were white with gold molding detail. The dining room was blue, with pink molding, mirrors, hundreds of gold baby angels, vases with flowers, and a large mirror. The living room was something else entirely. An ornate stone fireplace, with two large throne chairs, another vintage couch, and at least 4 suits of armor. The windows were framed by lavish tall velvet curtains. As I looked into the back yard, I realized there was a large white iron gazebo with angel statues all around. It would be beautiful if leaves grew on the trees but at this time of year, there were no leaves yet.
I finished off my muffin and took some selfies and pictures of the details around the house and posted them to my photography i********: story. I couldn’t wait to start booking sessions in this place.
I went back to the kitchen to grab a bottle of water for the road and glanced at the keys Ali had left behind for me. I cautiously grabbed them and opened the door to the garage. There I stared at the car that cost more than my life. I am a pretty good driver, don’t get me wrong, and I’m comfortable with making luxury purchases of my own, but I've never been in charge of something that was so…destructible.
I decided to just sit in the driver's seat for a second. Get a feel for the car. I wasn’t really going to drive it anywhere. Maybe, just a short safe ride around the neighborhood. Yeah, that would be fine. I wouldn’t get into any trouble just taking it around the neighborhood. I pressed the button on the remote for the garage door, and the rumbling of it opening startled me just a bit. I realized I was way too tense. I c****d my head from side to side and took a deep breath. I felt the steering wheel under my hands and put the car in reverse to back out. As I slowly pulled out of the garage and out onto the street, I suddenly felt excited. I put the car in drive and eased forward. Something overtook me and soon I found myself on the road, finally feeling the freedom I’d hoped for.
