Lyle shrugged. “You know what I mean. What with Mom passing away and you doing your thing every turn of the moon and then Randy coming and the whole breakdown that caused—”

“Yeah, I know.” Lyle shook his head and gave his dad a grin. “I wasn’t thinking. Of course I was. Hey, Dad?” Waiting until Vaughn looked over, Lyle drew his expression into a thoughtful frown. “How come we never looked into me going any further in school? Was it a money thing?”
Vaughn’s eyes widened. “You didn’t seem to have any interest. You never mentioned anything to me if you did.”
Lyle took a breath and responded as wistfully as he could manage without it sounding overdone. “I guess I had other things on my mind back then.”
