Chapter 5: Denied Entry

1726 Words
"State your name, please." After three attempts of failed entries, two security personnels assisted me towards the reception area. The alarm was still rammaging my ears even after leaving the first security pass. Three women at their corporate attires stood behind the counter, checking me with their eyes. Maybe trying to assess me if I'd cause trouble. It was early morning when I decided to leave the Valley. Just like what my father had told me, I used the underground tunnel directly connecting to Zenath Bay. The first train took off for early deliveries of goods in the city, so I silently rode that, hiding myself in a bucket hat and a face mask. It stopped just under the VzN storage building near the VzN Twin Tower. Because I was already near, I decided to visit my office first before making a detour back to Hacienda Heights. Unfortunately, I was stopped by the security personnels guarding the ground floor. Two securities are standing on both of my sides, making sure that I won't run away. "Mitchie Sullivan." I stated. This is not the actual scenario that I had imagined, actually. I should've entered through the exclusive gate on the parking space, but there was no way I could go there without a car and an exclusive pass. I should've known better. "Do you have an existing pass?" One of the three women over the desk, asked. "No. Never mind. I'll leave. You don't need to check on me." They frowned as they checked each other with their eyes and judging faces. I didn't mind. My phone vibrated just as I was about to leave. The two security personnel were literally following me towards the rotating glass door. When I stopped, they did too. I picked up my phone and clicked the message that was sent to me. The sender is not registered on my contacts but I immediately recognized it. After years of looking at the same sequence of numbers, I unconsciously memorized it somehow. "Still at the Valley?" Like a light bulb, my mind lit up when I saw the message. Louie's really giving me so much hope. I dialed his number fast. Not a second had passed and he already answered. "Are you at the office?" I looked at the two guards beside me, and I think they still knew the word privacy when both of them took a few steps back just when I started speaking. "At this hour, no. It's too early." Taking a glance at my wristwatch, I nodded. It's really too early for him to be here, but everyone's already here. It's just thirty minutes past seven and the office hours will start at eight. He could be here thirty minutes after eight as the CEO. "You're still at your unit, I suppose?" "Spill it. I'm preparing for the office." Sure, as if you didn't answer the phone in a split second. I shrugged. "Do you have a spare pass? I think I need one." Silence. There was silence at the other line for some kind of three seconds. Facing the glass door, I could clearly see the busy street outside. People are everywhere, rushing to their offices. I stepped out of the way when a group of people in different colored suits and ties entered through the glass doors. The two security guards that has been waiting for me, bowed their head towards them, greeting them good mornings. I was the only one who refused to do that. "Where are you exactly?" He asked. His voice became louder, probably he got his phone closer to his mouth. "Twin Tower, Building A. I'm at the lobby with two security guards beside me." "Are you coming back?" His voice became unstable, and I heard too many clanking sounds in the background. "Not too soon. I'm just visiting." "Wait for me there." The call ended surprisingly fast. He sounded like he's in a rush. He'll probably rush over here. If that's the case, he'd be here ten minutes from now. I faced the two guards and gave them a smile. However, on second thought, I am still wearing my mask so they wouldn't even see it. I pulled to my default expression. "I'll go there." I pointed my finger to the waiting area for visitors, "I'll wait for someone, so you can now go back to your posts." "Miss Sullivan, right? If this is not too much or personal, we'd like to ask you to remove your mask and your hat. Our automated systems need to detect faces for security." "It's too much and personal, honestly." Well honestly, it isn't. I just want to keep the comfort that these things are giving me. "You don't need to worry. I'll stay there quietly." Not waiting for them to say their argument, I marched towards the waiting area for visitors. They have three long sofas there, and a center table. I took the one without anyone seated. The sofa's facing the insides of the building and I could see everyone moving around in a hurry. Some were trying to get their morning coffees and breakfasts in an open cafeteria on the ground floor, and many were waiting for an elevator ride. I've never seen this place this hectic during these hours. Back then, I'd be coming to the office before eight, and I would always use the exclusive entrance from the exclusive parking. It's fun watching them now. "I'm going to get her picture today. I'll make sure of that." A familiar voice was coming closer. I looked up and peaked through the open space of my bucket hat. He took the sofa across from me while he's busy on a phone call. "I won't leave unless I get what I want. That man has been getting on my nerves. He's been making excuses. Now, I would never let him go without the thing I asked him." The Williams' siblings are really so persistent. I sighed. Here's Jerard again trying to get what he wanted. Kyla and him are really siblings. Pulling back my gaze, I pretended to be busy scrolling on my phone, but my ears and all my attention were on him. "Of course! I'll move first to get a better chance to get her hand. I still have a few days to impress her. For sure, she'd fall for me fast with my face card." Not trying to hold my laugh, I chuckled. He's really serious about his plans. His confidence is at an all time high and I wanted to pop his balloons so he'd fall hard. They are all just a bunch of scheming people, using everyone just to be on top. Now their target is me. Louie's number appeared again on my screen trying to connect with me. I answered it quickly. "I'm here." He said. I raised my head and looked to my left. He just entered. Everyone's greeting him so I ended the call. "He's here. Got to go. I'll talk to you later." Just as I stood up from my seat, Jerard was as quick as a lightning strike as he made his way towards him. I shrugged. I hope they learn their lesson the hard way. With too many people gathering in front of him, I slowly made my way towards his right side. I felt his gaze on me when I arrived so I looked up. Deep furrows appeared between his brows when our eyes met. He's carrying a brown paper bag on his left hand, and a coffee holder with two cups of coffee on the other. When everyone left after giving their greetings, the three of us were left facing each other. I just stood at my post in silence while Jerard made his way towards him. "Hey man. Bet you already have what I asked you for." Louie took a glance at me again, but this time, he handed me the coffee holder he was holding. I took it fast so he could have all his time to deal with an asshole. Scanning the two hot coffees, one is a Caramel macchiato and the other is a plain black coffee as what is written on the paper cups. Just what I needed this morning. He suddenly reached for his pocket with his free hand and pulled out a black card from there. He handed it to me without looking. Not as confused as I could be, I received it well. So they changed the exclusive passes to this black with golden accent one? If ever I chose to go back home first before deciding to be here, the chances of getting in would be close to none then. Without saying anything, I left him there and marched to the scanner. I could feel everyone's eyes on me, especially the three ladies at the reception area, but I cared less. "Stop her!" Just as I was about to tap the pass to the scanner for a possible entrance, Jerard's voice echoed through the lobby. I turned back only to see him pointing his finger at me. "That woman is a thief. I know her so well. See how he just gave that card to her? They're both plotting something behind your backs and you all are just watching!!" Now, literally everyone present on the ground floor had their eyes and attention on me, looking at me as if I really did something wrong. "You only have fifteen minutes to go and face your desks!" Louie said, trying to suppress his annoyance with a clenched jaw. "And then what? You'll sneak her in? Look!" Jerard's trying to get everyone's attention with his annoyingly loud yells, pointing his finger to me and to Louie. He's even going around in circles just to confirm everyone's attention is on us. "This is how your CEO is deceiving you all for years!" To think that he's just doing this just to get a picture of me. I don't tolerate this kind of attitude. Not in my building. "What's happening here?" Just when I was about to step forward and do something, a group of men wearing black suits and ties flocked inside the lobby. They easily surrounded everyone as my father made his ever so grand entrance. This is not getting any better by the minute.
