  ANTONIO   "Giovanni, how did it go?" I asked when he finally called back, long after he had warned me that Dante was after me.   If Dante didn't know that I was already aware of his plans, that he had hired someone to stir trouble in my territory, then he would grow careless.   Carelessness bought time, and time was all I needed to strike.   In my line of business, you had to learn early to watch your back.   Anyone could be an enemy, whether driven by their own ambition or working quietly for someone else.   The game had rules, and survival depended on knowing them better than everyone else.   "Dante suspected nothing," Giovanni answered. "He gave me another task. He wants me to spy around your area and look for weaknesses he can use against you."   "I see," I replied, scoffing.
