KAEL'S POV
“Elena!”
So that was her name.
I stepped closer, studying her face.
“Elena,” I repeated. “Who are you?”
She straightened.
“I’m the person who saved your brother's life, and now I want to go home. I don't want trouble with you, and I certainly don't want trouble with the police. I'll leave, and I'll say nothing about what I've seen here.”
A faint smile tugged at my lips.
She had just walked into Blackthorn territory, treated a wounded member of my family, shot three of my men, and watched me kill another. Yet she was standing there negotiating her release as though we were discussing a business deal.
“I suppose I should thank you for saving my brother.”
Her eyes widened slightly.
“Unfortunately, what you're asking isn't possible,” I continued. “Consider the fact that I'm letting you leave this room alive as my way of returning the favor.”
A groan came from behind us.
“s**t, I'm getting dizzy!”
Pablo swayed on his feet.
Elena's expression changed instantly.
“Damn it.”
She rushed toward him and dropped beside him, pressing both hands against the wound in his thigh.
“I didn't hit the artery,” she muttered as she examined the injury. “But you're losing too much blood.”
Gambo and Damon stared at her.
The woman we'd kidnapped had just shot one of our men, yet she was now fighting to keep him alive.
“Clear the table,” she ordered.
Nobody moved.
“I need clean gauze, antiseptic, and whatever medical supplies you have. If you want him alive, move.”
I watched her for a moment.
There was no hesitation in her actions. No satisfaction from seeing the man she had wounded suffer. She simply treated him because he needed help.
“Give her whatever she needs,” I ordered.
Gambo immediately moved.
“Once she's finished, take her to one of the guest rooms.”
I turned toward Damon.
“She is your responsibility. Nobody goes near her unless I give the order. Understood?”
“Yes.”
“And keep yourself under control. I don't want unnecessary problems.”
Damon nodded.
“Yes, Kael.”
Elena's head snapped toward me.
I waited.
Now she knew my name.
Kael Blackthorn.
Most people reacted differently when they learned who I was.
Elena simply clicked her tongue and turned back toward Pablo.
“Can someone help me, for f**k's sake?” she demanded. “If I don't stop the bleeding, he'll be dead within minutes.”
I almost smiled.
She was certainly unusual.
I left the game room without saying anything else and headed toward my office.
Ronan appeared in the hallway before I reached it.
“You saw everything?”
“The cameras cover most of the game room,” he replied. “I saw what happened.”
I continued walking.
“What do you think of her?”
“She doesn't look like an ordinary medic.”
“I know.”
“She could be a cop.”
I shook my head.
“I don't think so. A cop wouldn't reveal herself that easily, and she wouldn't stay behind to treat the men she had just shot.”
Ronan glanced at me.
“Then what do you think she is?”
“I don't know.”
I stopped outside my office and looked at him.
“That is what I want you to find out.”
Ronan waited.
“Her full name. Where she works. Where she lives. Her medical qualifications. Her family. Anyone she's connected to. I want everything.”
“How quickly?”
“Yesterday.”
A faint smile crossed his face.
“I'll get started.”
I opened my office door, then stopped.
“Ronan.”
He turned.
“Keep it quiet. I don't want anyone in the organization knowing we're investigating her.”
“Understood.”
He turned to leave.
“Have Beni moved to his room once Elena finishes treating him, and take care of the body in the game room.”
“I'll handle both.”
“That i***t had been ignoring my orders for some time. I won't tolerate anyone in my organization thinking they can do whatever they want.”
“I know. He brought it on himself.”
“Talk to his family and make sure they have what they need. I don't want them suffering because of his mistakes.”
Ronan nodded before walking away.
I entered my office and noticed immediately that Luna was gone.
I released a quiet breath and sat behind my desk.
The security feed from the game room was still displayed on my computer, so I pulled it up.
Elena was still there.
Gambo and Damon were helping her move Pablo onto the pool table while she prepared more gauze. Beni had already been taken away, but Elena continued working as though she were back in a hospital rather than surrounded by armed criminals.
She had pointed a gun at my head without trembling.
She had shot three of my men.
She had watched me kill another.
And now she was fighting to keep Pablo alive.
I leaned back in my chair.
Something about her didn't make sense.
But it wasn't only her strange composure that held my attention.
It was the way my wolf had reacted to her.
Mine.
I stared at the screen for several seconds.
Who was Elena?
And why had my wolf chosen her?
