Ayla’s POV
I barely make it into the bathroom before throwing up my guts into the sink. I grip the edges of the sink, sweat beaded at my temples as I try to stabilize my breathing.
When it finally passes, I rest against the porcelain and lift my head, the girl staring at me barely looked herself.
Dark circles had begun forming under my eyes, and the last thing I wanted was people sensing something is wrong with me.
It’s been a week since I last saw Kael, a week since I said I hated him. He’s probably avoiding me because of that but he needs to do something about the bond. I wake up almost every night restless, I just want some peace in my life but it looks like that’s only something I can dream of.
I rinsed my mouth and splashed cold water on my face. Then I grab on a leather jacket and head out of my room. Some fresh air would help me a lot right now.
I stepped outside into the night, the sky was bright with stars—stars that reminded me of my father, he would say the brightest star shined in the darkest night.
I lower myself onto the grass, the ring catches light. I rubbed the metal on my finger, it was cold. If I truly am a sayer, why didn’t my father tell me? why did he let me grow up ignorant, now I know my parents hid themselves from me all these while and it hurts to not know who I am.
I need answers.
“Why are you here alone?” A voice slides into my mind.
I flinch and turn just in time to see Kiara approaching. She lowers herself onto the grass beside me.
“That s**t creeps me out,” I mutter. “And I just needed air,” I replied.
I could feel her eyes burning through my cheeks,
“It’s dangerous, you shouldn’t be outside by this hour, Ayla.”
“Dangerous?” I frown. “Why?”
“There have been sightings, rogue wolves around the mountain and even near the pack.” Kiara says
I snorted weakly, “Thanks for the information.”
She doesn’t smile or say another word.
Silence stretches between us, I turn the ring on my finger again,
“Kiara,” I say slowly, “I want to know more about this ring.”
She glances down at the ring on my finger and her gaze sharpens with interest.
“And I want to know more about Sayers.”
A soft smile forms on her lips. “I’ve been waiting for you to ask,” she says. “Sister.”
I blink. “Sister?”
She nods. “We call each other that. Or… we used to.”
She exhales, pausing for a moment. “My sisters discarded me. I wasn’t like them. I wasn’t powerful so they left me to die,”
She turns to me, “Now that your wolf has fully awakened. It’s time I teach you how to be a powerful Sayer.”
Her statement sent chills down my spine, “I have a question.”
She nods once. “Ask.”
“How did someone like you, I mean you’re not a wolf—so how did you get accepted in a wolf territory?” I hesitate.
“Especially under someone like Kael.”
“That is a story for another day,” she says, rising to her feet.
“We should go inside, it’s not safe.”
She extends her hand towards me.
I stare at it.
This is the same woman who stood by while Kael used me that night, so I pushed myself up without taking her hand.
“I know what you’re thinking, and I’m sorry I—“
A loud howl cuts her from finishing her sentence. And at that moment, a sharp pain shoots through my ribs.
Kael.
“He’s in trouble,” Kiara says, already moving.
We run till we get into the forest, branches claw at us as we follow the sound to find Kael. The bond pulls me forward with every step I take.
We enter a clearing and the sight freezes my blood.
Kael stands in the center, shirt torn, blood streaking down his arms. Three rogue wolves circle him, their eyes feral as they stalk him.
One lunges, Kiara’s eyes flare, she lifts her hand and whispers something I don’t understand. The wolf’s body snapped midair— It collapsed to the ground lifeless.
Kael doesn’t hesitate. He shifts partially, and goes for the two wolves at once. He grips them by the jaw and slams them together before twisting their necks.
My pulse races, Kael looks different, like a killing machine. He didn’t hesitate to rip them apart. He looks at me with his side eyes once.
Silence returned for a second but my chest still felt tight… something kept tugging at me.
That’s when I feel a presence behind me. The moment I turn, another rogue wolf jumps out, aiming for my throat, I fall to the ground and a cry tears out from my throat.
In that moment, Kael shoves me aside, and takes the blow meant for me. Teeth sinking into his side. Blood sprays around as Kael roared, tearing the wolf apart and killing it in a final strike.
Then he stumbles.
“No—Kael!” I catch him as he drops to his knees.
He drags me down with him, his breathing shallow and body going cold beneath my touch.
His eyes meet mine once, before they shut close.
Kiara gasps, her hand clamped onto her mouth.
“Kiara, I can’t—I can’t feel the bond.”
