THE FIRST NIGHT

2074 Words
“I slept in a stranger’s house… knowing he was somewhere watching.” Night arrived in the mansion without announcement. Stillness held the air just as before. Nothing shifted in how things felt around. The world stayed quiet, unchanged in its breath. Even now, the mood remained fixed without shift. Still just as loud. Nothing changed in the sound. Darkness arrives without warning. Morning slips away unnoticed. Time blends into a single stretch. Night comes like any other hour. Light fades but nothing shifts. A slow fade crept across the room, less like sunset, more like a signal - some unseen mechanism choosing nightfall without asking. Light thinned out, pulled back evenly, not by sky but by something built into the walls. Later, Adeline stayed inside her room when dinner ended. She did not leave even though the meal was done. Maybe that lump on the plate counted as a meal here. Dinner looked different where we were. Left behind, her food sat cold until someone removed it - no words, no glance, nothing asked. Silence filled the space where interest should have been. Still, her plate sat untouched. Quietly, others looked away. Somehow, the question never came up. Oddly, hunger wasn’t mentioned at all. Nothing came up in questions. What really got under her skin started creeping up more each day. The absence of questions. Questions showed someone was listening. And acknowledgment meant humanity. This home gave nothing at all. Out near the glass, Adeline moved once more. Lights glowed gently across the grounds, placed just so. A quiet brightness shaped each corner of the property. Every path visible. Every angle controlled. Light spills everywhere, leaving no corners untouched. Alive feels like something missing when nothing surprises. Fingers touched the glass once more. Cold had settled in by then. Not physically cold. Emotionally cold. Her fingers slid back, inch by inch. “This place is insane,” she whispered. Inside the space, her voice seemed thinner compared to how loud it felt inside her thoughts. Her back faced him before stepping toward the mattress. The frame creaked as weight settled into it. Ready ahead of time. Perfectly made. No wrinkles. Still looks brand new. Not a mark anywhere. Like it never left the box. Zero wear showing up at all. Like silence had held it tight forever. Adeline sat on the edge. Lower yourself down after a moment. A soft dip formed where she settled onto the surface. Not noticeably. Still, it hits just right to seem meant. She stared at the ceiling. Just like every other part of the home, it matched completely. Perfect. Controlled. Silent. Nothing about her mind would stay still. The cameras. The movement. How the house gave a reaction. Everything seemed to notice itself. How it all watched, almost like breathing had an audience. Her eyelids dropped shut. Yet rest stayed away. Stillness took her. Not a move. Listening. To nothing. What followed only deepened the mess. Inside such a home, silence carried weight instead of emptiness. It meant discipline. Hidden structure was what it pointed to. Stillness wore a mask of quiet. Quiet stood where sound should have been. A small bend took shape in her fingers beneath the fabric. The blanket held them there, quiet, unmoving. Midnight had long passed before she admitted sleep would likely stay out of reach. Or at all. Her body stopped resisting mid-step - sleep arriving not soft, but sudden, as if it had quit asking. She didn’t dream. Maybe she did. Or perhaps her mind had let go of it entirely. Yet one midnight, her eyes opened briefly. Not fully. Enough awareness is there. Darkness had deepened inside the space since last time. A hush of light settled low, brushing the ground quietly. The room held its breath in dim tones just above the surface. Shadows filled the rest. The light stayed far away. She blinked slowly. Her body heavy. Her mind disoriented. Her mind sat blank at first, unsure of the room around her. Back it came again. The contract. The house. The rules. The cameras. A breath caught low in her ribs. Her gaze shifted sideways. Quiet filled the space between us. Stillness held every corner untouched. Too still. Up she rose, bit by bit. Then stillness took over. Now the quiet sat on her skin like a weight she hadn’t felt before. Darkness made the depth grow. Nightfall changed how it seemed. Heavier. More aware. Her fingers touched her eyes, a soft breath followed. The air left her lungs slow. Her fingers clenched tight. A quiet voice broke through. She spoke without sound. Back on the bed she went. Again, eyes fixed on the ceiling. Still staring upward, like before. Time passed slowly. Minutes blurred. Time stretched, perhaps. Could have been minutes. Maybe longer. Hours even. The clock blurred. Hard to tell when it stopped mattering. In a place like this, time didn’t feel reliable. Her body shifted, just a little, toward one hip. Out of the corner of her eye, the doorway caught her attention. Then she looked that way. It was closed. Just like you'd expect, the place had already shut down. Locked, maybe. Controlled, certainly. Her muscles tightened, yet she made them loosen anyway. Inhale. Exhale. Again, her eyelids began to droop. This time, sleep began to drift back. Slowly. Softly. A pause that feels too much like danger hiding in plain sight. Then - A sound. Her eyelids snapped apart without warning. Everything inside her froze. Stillness took over, quiet and sudden. She listened. Nothing. She frowned slightly. Most likely just the building shifting slightly over time. Or her imagination. Back went her gaze, lifting to meet the ceiling once more. Tried again. But then - Another sound. Faint. Not mechanical. Not structural. A door. Up jumped Adeline, straight and sudden. Out of nowhere, her pulse jumped - fast, tense. A jolt ran through her veins like a spark catching dry leaves. She stared at her bedroom door. Still closed. Still locked. Yet the noise didn’t start within her bedroom walls. Outside was where it started. It arrived without warning. Beyond where the light reaches. A stretch of silence follows. Into shadowed corners it goes. Further than footsteps echo. Where dust settles slow. A door opening. Slowly. Deliberately. Not a single muscle moved. Stillness held her tight. Listening. Wrongness sat in the quiet after. Not empty. Intentional. Slowly her breathing grew quiet while thoughts tangled in confusion. What happens when employees move around after dark? Unlikely. Whole chunks of time passed without anyone stepping near his side. Clearly visible, though nobody said a thing. It stood out all on its own. What caused the shift at this moment? Out came Adeline’s feet, sliding down from the mattress like morning light creeping across the floor. One leg followed the other, dragging seconds behind them. Down went her feet, silent on the ground. She stood. Waited. Listened again. Nothing. Something inside said move was a bad idea. To ignore it. As if her ears had caught nothing at all. Curiosity sometimes slips past terror when quiet feels too stiff. Her steps dragged as she approached the doorway. Each step deliberate. Careful. Now the air in the space had shifted somehow. It sat quieter, though nothing had moved. Smaller. As if the air had stilled, matching her pause. Her fingers touched the door at last. Her ear touched the surface, soft at first. A quiet moment held there, still. Silence. Yet different from the quiet that came earlier. Out of all of them, this stood the deepest. Distance. Nothing moved past that point anymore. Or paused. She hesitated. After a pause, she began to ease the door open, only slightly. A faint glow stretched along the walls of the passage beyond. Empty. Still. Perfect. Too perfect. Out she stepped, cautious at first. A slow move into the open came next. Cold bit up through her soles, sharper than anything she’d felt inside her own four walls. A path led off left, another right. Lengths of hallway vanished into distance either way. No visible movement. No staff. No sound. Her gaze shifted just a bit. Out of nowhere, her eyes landed on it. Down at the far end of the hall. A gap of light spills through where the door rests open just a touch. Not her wing. Further in. Further on past the front rooms. Inside beyond where the light fades first. A breath caught low in her ribs. That doorway stayed shut until now. Later, maybe. Not now. Later, but not while she walked. Not ever. Forward she moved, just a little. A single quiet motion broke the stillness. Then another. Each movement careful. Controlled. The house felt different at night. Not quite a grand estate. A bit like a setup shifting into another state. Midway through the hall, her feet slowed to a halt. She stood still where the light bent across the floor. Listening again. Still nothing. Yet the quiet seemed… new. A presence lingered, as if a breath had slipped by without stopping. A shape waited beyond the c***k of light, just there. Her eyes stayed fixed on that gap in the frame. She shouldn’t go. She knew that. When things got intense, rules meant nothing. Instinct did. Fear rose without warning. Stillness followed close behind. Yet a different sound cut through more sharply. Curiosity. Forward she went once more. Step by step. Just before her hand touched the doorknob. Just a c***k remained, never quite shut nor truly open. Just slightly ajar. A shadow stretches out behind, barely there. She hesitated. After a pause, he began moving nearer. Trying to see inside. Nothing visible. Only darkness. No movement. No light. She swallowed. A soft brush of her fingertips met the doorway's rim. Cold. Too cold. A bit wider she moved it, little by little. It creaked. Softly. Controlled. Still, the noise seemed hesitant to speak up. Inside - A room. Large. Unlit. But not empty. Shapes. Faint outlines of furniture. Patterns like that don’t just happen by accident. Her foot crossed the threshold. Inside began where her shoe touched floor. Then stopped. Her breath slowed. Beneath her skin, that sensation lingered. Not imagined - real. A quiet pulse where nothing should be. Not saw. Felt. A presence. Hidden among the clutter. A quiet corner holds it now. Her gaze shifted just a bit. Trying to adjust to the darkness. Then - Something stirred at her back. Quiet, but close. Adeline froze instantly. Slowly turned. Nothing moved in the hallway at her back. Still. Yet the noise lingered, real in her mind. She could not shake it loose. Something had shifted. Not loudly. Not dramatically. But deliberately. Her gaze returned to the space inside. Darkness stared back. Then everything stopped It hit her - something felt off. This door stood wide, yet more than that - it breathed possibility. A hand turned the latch before she arrived. The door stood ajar, waiting without words. Back she moved fast, just past the doorway. Beating again, her heart came alive. Each breath came slow, yet tight in her chest. One final look she gave the room before turning away. Back it slid, inch by inch, till nearly shut. It resisted slightly. As if a part of me resisted shutting it down. Adeline’s fingers tightened. She pulled harder. At last, the door shifted. It began to inch open when nobody was watching. Click. Closed. Silence returned instantly. Yet now the quiet felt different somehow. It felt aware. For quite some time, Adeline did not move at all. Backing off step by step, the figure slipped into silence. Staring hard at the doorway. Still watching, waiting. The entrance holds every bit of attention. Nothing else matters right now. Focus stays locked there. Then she pivoted slowly, heading toward her room It took her a while to see it. Only when her foot hit the middle of the hall did it click. A shimmer barely shows itself inside the pane fixed to the wall. She stopped. Looked. And froze. Because behind her - A small movement caught the light - ceiling camera twitched above the hall floor. Not randomly. Not mechanically delayed. But directly. Following her movement. A creak breaks the silence - moonlight spills across the floor. Hinges groan under slow movement. Wind pushes through before footsteps follow. Something shifts beyond the frame now wide open.
