Loosing hope

(Alexander) I had been trying to get work done most of the afternoon, but so many things kept creeping into my mind about Zephra. I had been trying to think about how I was going to have this conversation with her. How do you say you are actually a mythical creature and have grown up to be something you aren't? I have gone over every scenario. She hates me in everyone. "Is there something else you want on the list, Alpha?" The kitchen omega was standing in front of my desk. She was waiting for me to approve the grocery order for this month. I had forgotten she was even there. "I'm sorry it looks fine." Picking up the pen and signing it, she looked confused. I handed it back to her. "Thank you, Alpha." Her voice sounded a little strained. She turned and walked out of the office just as Riley was walking in. "Hey, so have you found anything?" This was one of the things on my mind. What had him and Steven found out? Had they gotten anywhere with where this girl was from or what had happened to her? "I have a call in to the hospital security archives, but they don't think they have anything back that far. Also, the car accident report came in, and it states that a semi veered into oncoming traffic, so no big surprise there. The driver, they think, fell asleep at the wheel. He just kept talking about a bright light that came out of nowhere." He handed me the police report, and as I scanned it, Steven came in. "Hopefully, you have something." Looking at him with a bundle of roses in his hand, I was feeling a little skeptical. "Well, maybe and maybe not. I remembered a story our mom told us when we were pups, and so I went and asked her about it. There is still some stuff I want to check out. Dad is going to talk to a rogue contact. He has to see if he can find out about the rogues and who they worked for." He sat down and set the flowers on my desk. "Are those for me?" They were nice, but I was not in the mood for flowers. I was hoping he wasn't trying to go on some hot date, and those were for her. "No. I was telling mom about Zephra, and she wanted me to bring the flowers for her." Riley looked at the flowers. You could see the love in his eyes for his mother. She was so sweet and had always treated me as one of her sons. "You didn't tell her everything, did you?" The last thing I needed was for that to get around the pack about some strange wolf that didn't know she was a wolf. We needed to find out about her first. "Of course not. Just that she got chased onto our packlands by some rogues and that we didn't know anything about her." He furrowed his brow as if there was something else he was worried about. "Ok, spill. You have something else going on in that head of yours. I can smell the smoke of the wheels turning." Riley was the first to say it, even though I was thinking about it. "It's just a theory. I want to check some stuff out first before I lay down the whole thing." He sounded a little worried. "Mom wants you to come visit more, by the way." Steven told Riley with a punch to his arm.I knew it was meant to draw our attention away from what he had in his mind. "Hey, I will go and visit. I was just there... "Riley stopped to try and remember the last time he was there. He seemed to be lost, as it had been a long time. We had been so busy with the pack business that time just seemed to slip away. He needed to go see his mom and dad. I kept wishing I could see mine. If they were still alive, I would see them every day. "By the way, is Jessica busy on Saturday?" Riley took me out of my musings. Why did he want to know about my sister? She was far too young for him. I let out a low growl. Riley put his hands up in surrender. "No, it is for Giana. She was upset about not being a cool kid in school, so I told her Steven and I would take her shopping and then out to dinner. She asked if you and Jessica could come. I knew you were going to be busy with Zephra, so I told her I would ask about Jessica." He was talking a mile a minute. Was I really getting that aggressive? "I don't think she has anything planned this weekend. I will ask her. I didn't mean to get upset at you. It has just been a long day and I am really tired." Running my hands through my hair, I tried to relieve the tension. We needed to take a break. Besides, it was almost dinner time. I wanted to go get a shower and clean up before meeting Zephra and Trisha. "Hey, it is almost dinner time. Let's knock off for tonight, and we can start fresh tomorrow. I think we could all use some time away from this stuff." Closing the file folder on my desk, I stood up and stretched. "Sounds great, boss. Do you want to take Zephra the flowers?" Steven handed the bouquet to me. These would hopefully make her smile. I would have one of the omegas put them in a vase and set it on the table for her. Taking the flowers, I nodded to Steven. "Thanks." His look was one of understanding. Even though he had not found his mate yet, it seemed he was more understanding of the situation than Riley. We all left the office, and I locked the door behind me. I was headed to the elevator when a voice hit me like scratching on a chalkboard. "Hey, Alex, are those for me?" Tiana came over to me with her sweet perfume hitting me before she got close. This girl was so obnoxious and wouldn't leave me alone. "No, Tiana, they aren't. Now, if you will excuse me." I started walking to the elevator again, but she jumped in front of me. "Come on, Alex, you know you want me. I have saved myself for you ." She put her hands on my chest. The last thing this girl had done was save herself from someone. Almost all of my warriors had slept with her. She was a money-loving leech, and I had told her more than once I was not interested in her. "Tiana, I am going to tell you this one last time. It is Alpha to you and I am not interested in you. I only want my true mate, and you are definitely not her. You need to take your paws off of me and leave my sight." The last part had been said with a low growl. Maybe she would get the hint. She stepped back and bowed her head, but the look in her eyes was fury. She had told many of the girls she would be the Luna of this pack. I had heard the rumors through Giana and Jessica. When they told me about it, I sat Tianna down and told her to stop saying those things because it was never going to happen. She was getting more and more persistent with the passing of the years that I didn't have a mate. But that had all changed. She just didn't know it yet. I was not going to have her messing things up for me with Zephra. I walked to the elevator and pushed the button. I calmed down as I started thinking about how beautiful Zephra was. Her scent hit me as I got out of the elevator on the Alpha floor. There was no denying she was my mate.
