Cool Your Heels

(Steven) I had been coming out of the dining room when I saw Alex taking Zephra out to the garden. Maybe he was gonna take her out there to have this conversation. She looked apprehensive about following him, but at the same time she looked like she was going to run. I waited until they were outside the doors and went to the window to watch. Hopefully, she will give Alex the chance to explain. He sat her down on the bench and then stepped back from her. He was starting to get undressed. He was going to shift. Was this a good idea? Wouldn't that scare her more? I couldn't take my eyes off the whole scene. He shifted effortlessly into his big black wolf. All alphas had black wolves. They were normally large but Alex had a massive beast for a wolf. When he stepped over to her she petted him like he was a lap dog. She wasn't afraid. She was actually smiling and enjoying it. Then I saw her face change to uncertainty. She stood up and walked over to the rose bush that was at the far end of the garden. Was she going to run away? Was she thinking of the reality of the situation? Alex had changed back and was putting on his clothes. He walked over to her and put his hands on her shoulders. She leaned back into his chest and I could see Alex relax as he put his arms around her from behind. She turned around and there were tears running down her face. Why was she crying? I heard Riley walking up and decided to stop him before he got too close. They needed this time together. Riley still wasn't sure about Zephra and his attitude could make things worse. "Hey Riley, where are you headed?" I walked towards him with a sandwich I had made in the kitchen. "I have been looking for Alex. The Beta and his mate will be here in the morning. They don't sound pleased. He needs to be ready for their questions." Riley looked at my sandwich and lifted it off the plate. I raised an eyebrow at him as he took a bite. I handed him the plate and he continued eating. "Thanks, this is good. Did you make this?" His words were muffled with the food in his mouth. What a pain. He didn't even ask me. Being his normal self. As brothers there were no boundaries. We shared everything as children. As teenagers, we even ended up swapping girlfriends. "Yeah, since we had such a ruckus at dinner, I never got the chance to eat. I guess I will go make another one. Want to come with me?" I was still trying to keep him away from Alex and Zephra. "I guess. Have you seen Alex?" We were walking towards the dining room which led to the kitchen. I waited till we were almost in the kitchen before I answered. "Yeah he is in the garden with Zephra." I could hear him give a low growl as I walked to the refrigerator to get out the same ingredients that I had put on the first sandwich. What was his problem with her? She seemed to be a nice girl. Granted, she wasn't what any of us had expected Alex to find for his mate, but things have a way of changing. We just needed to give her a chance. "Why are they out there? Does he want to build her a necklace out of flower pedals? Or maybe tell her how beautiful she was under the moon?" he snorted as he took the last bite of the sandwich. He walked over and put the plate in the sink. He turned around and leaned against the counter to watch me make the sandwich. "What is your issue with her? Really, man, you need to give it a rest. Until we have the mate bond with our mates, we don't know what we will be like either. But can't you at least be a little supportive?" I was putting the meat and cheese with lettuce and tomatoes on the bread as I realized there was some bacon from the breakfast I had seen. I reached back into the refrigerator as Riley's hand came down hard on the counter. "I don't care what my real mate bond is like, I will not loose my head over a woman! Geez, he has done nothing for the last 24 hours, but have us run around trying to figure out her previous life. Now we have an angry Beta and his mate coming here from an allied pack to gather their daughter, who literally is better suited to be the Luna than that human wolf girl. I may not like Tiana, but what she said tonight was correct. We don't even know why they were chasing her. What if she stole from them? What if she killed one of them? What if this is all a ruse to get her into our territory and give them intel? " His eyes were blazing and I knew he was not even sure his claws had started to come out. I put the bacon down on the counter and went over to him. "Listen to me. You are being irrational right now. She is a girl who has grown up in the human world not knowing she is a werewolf. She is not the Trojan horse for bloody sake. Alex is in love with her. She needs our understanding and help to get through this. Isn't it supposed to be your job to protect the Alpha and his Luna? Instead you are trying everything to rip them apart. Knock off your s**t. You are being overly dramatic. Start looking at things from a different perspective. Just because your ex did a number on you doesn't mean everyone is going to." I knew that last part was a dangerous subject to bring up, but every since that evil woman he had been with had seduced him he was sure every woman was the devil. "How dare you compare this to that? I am just worried about Alex and the pack. I don't fully believe her story. It sounds too fairytaleish." I knew I had to remind him of the story our mother had told us and explain what I had found out from mom. "OK, I am going to tell you my theory but you have to listen with an open mind. Is that fair enough?" I walked back over to the sandwich and explained it all to him. I also made him another sandwich because of how he was eyeing mine. Once I was done, I pushed his sandwich to him and we sat down to eat. He chewed and I could see the wheels in his head going. He didn't say anything until we were finished. "Maybe that is why it sounds like a fairytale. We have heard this before. Do you really think this could be that lost baby? Wasn't there something in there about a special Alpha and Luna who had this baby?" He seemed more composed now and was really thinking about what I had told him. "I don't know, I can't fully remember it all. That is why I told you both I wanted to do some more research into this whole tale. I need to see if anyone else knows anything about this. I just don't know where to go to find out." Picking up our plates, I walked to the sink. I was still trying to think of somewhere I could research this. "The Elder archives. They would have the birth records of the child and what happened to the old Silver Creek pack. We will go there in the morning. I don't think Alex will miss us." Standing up, he put his hand on my shoulder and gave me a smile. It would be easier going through the records with the two of us.
