The social worker came. Unannounced.

I was putting Min-ah down for nap.

I heard voices.

They weren’t security.
They were thugs.
I heard Jae-hyun: “Get out of my house.”
“Board says this house belongs to the company.”

Scuffle.

Min-woo screamed.
I ran down.

Min-woo was crying in the corner.

He let go.

Police sirens.
Neighbors called.
The men ran.

Report filed.
“We have them on camera,” the officer said. “Board members. This is kidnapping and assault.”
Jae-hyun’s knuckles were bleeding.
I was holding Min-woo.
Min-ah was asleep on my shoulder.
Jae-hyun looked at me.
“You hit a man with a pan.”
“He touched my kids.”
He almost smiled.
6:00 PM - Back Home
Grocery delivery.
Paid for by Mrs. Kang’s friend.
Enough for 2 weeks.
Jae-hyun sat on the floor.
Kids on either side.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I brought this to you.”
“Don’t,” I said. “We’re in this together.”
He looked up at me.
Eyes dark.
“They want me to choose. Company or kids.”
“Choose us.”
“I already did.”
8:00 PM - The Call
Unknown number.
Jae-hyun answered.
Put it on speaker.
Board Chairman: “Mr. Kang. Final offer. Sign the custody papers. You get your company back. 5 billion won. Or we take everything. Including the children.”
Silence.
Jae-hyun’s voice was ice.
“Touch my family again. And I will end you. Not the company. You. Personally.”

He hung up.
His hands were shaking.
I took them.
Held them.
10:00 PM - Planning
He pulled out his laptop.
Old one. Not company issued.
“Okay. New plan. We fight back.”
“How? You have no money.”
“I have skills. I have contacts. And I have proof.”
He opened a folder.
Emails. Documents.
“The board has been embezzling for years. I have everything.”
“Why didn’t you use it before?”
“Because I was trying to be nice.”
He closed the laptop.

Midnight - His Room
He couldn’t sleep.
Neither could I.
He was sitting on the bed. Head in hands.

“Of fighting. Of being CEO. Of being scared.”
I sat next to him.

He turned.
Pulled me into his lap.

He kissed me.

Like he was afraid it was the last time.

Came home.

Cheap ramen.
But we were laughing.

Spun me around.

Kids cheered.
