Loving my boss
Chapter 3: Daddy's Not Leaving
Rule #1 of fighting the state:
Don’t cry.
Rule #2: Don’t let them see you break.
Rule #3: Don’t fall in love with the nanny in the courthouse bathroom.
We broke every rule.
---
7:00 AM - Thursday, Seoul Family Court
Black suit. Again.
Jae-hyun looked like a CEO today.
Not the sweatpants dad.
The billionaire the board wanted to destroy.
Me: Navy dress. Hair up.
Holding Min-woo and Min-ah’s hands.
They were scared.
“Is Daddy going to jail?” Min-ah whispered.
“No baby,” I said. “Daddy’s just talking to some people.”
Mrs. Kang and Mr. Kang were there.
Lawyers. 4 of them.
Across the room: The board. 5 men in gray suits.
And the state prosecutor.
Jae-hyun saw me.
Walked over.
“Are you sure you want to do this?”
“Yes.”
“If this goes bad—”
“Then we deal with it. Together.”
He squeezed my hand.
In front of everyone.
Didn’t care.
9:00 AM - Inside the Courtroom
Judge: Female. 50s. Sharp eyes.
Prosecutor stood first.
“Your Honor, Mr. Kang Jae-hyun abandoned his duties as CEO for 3 months. He misled shareholders. He is financially unstable. We request temporary custody of minors Min-woo Kang and Min-ah Kang be granted to the state, pending psychological evaluation.”
My stomach dropped.
Board lawyer: “Mr. Kang prioritized personal matters over a 10-billion-won company. This shows poor judgment. Unfit to lead, unfit to parent.”
Jae-hyun’s lawyer stood.
“My client took approved leave to care for a sick parent and his children. He has provided for them. He has been present. We have witnesses.”
“Call your first witness.”
“Miss Han Soo-jin. The children’s nanny.”
My legs shook.
I walked up.
Swore in.
“Miss Han, how long have you worked for the Kang family?”
“2 weeks.”
“And in that time, how often was Mr. Kang present with the children?”
“Every day. All day.”
“Did he work?”
“No. He cooked. He played. He stayed up when Min-ah had a fever.”
The prosecutor: “Miss Han, were you aware Mr. Kang was a CEO?”
“I found out this week.”
“And did the family hire you to mislead the state?”
Objection.
“Sustained.”
But the damage was done.
Whispers.
10:30 AM - Jae-hyun Testifies
He walked up.
No notes.
Looked at the judge. Not the board.
“Your Honor. 3 months ago my mother had a stroke. My kids were 4. I had a choice. Run a company, or raise my kids. I chose my kids.”
“That’s not the choice a CEO makes,” the prosecutor said.
“Then maybe I’m not a good CEO,” Jae-hyun said. “But I’m a good dad.”
He looked at Min-woo and Min-ah in the gallery.
“I was there for every breakfast. Every bedtime. Every nightmare. I missed board meetings. I don’t regret it.”
The judge was quiet.
Then: “Mr. Kang, are you employed?”
“I resigned this morning.”
Gasps.
“I resigned as CEO of KW Construction. Effective immediately. I will not abandon my children for a company.”
The board looked furious.
I wanted to cry.
11:00 AM - The Verdict
Judge deliberated 10 minutes.
Came back.
“Custody remains with Mr. Kang Jae-hyun. However, state will conduct monthly check-ins for 6 months. Mr. Kang is to maintain stable housing and income.”
We won.
Jae-hyun closed his eyes. Breathed.
The kids ran to him.
“Daddy!”
He picked them both up.
Held them.
I saw his shoulders shake.
He was crying.
12:00 PM - Outside the Courthouse
Reporters.
CEO RESIGNS
CUSTODY BATTLE WON
He shielded the kids.
Me too.
In the car, he finally spoke.
“I don’t have a job.”
“You have us,” I said.
He looked at me.
“I do, don’t I?”
3:00 PM - Back at the Mansion
Empty.
He was no longer CEO.
No more board meetings.
No more 10-billion projects.
Just... us.
He sat on the floor with the kids.
Coloring.
Like nothing happened.
I made dinner.
He came into the kitchen.
“Why are you still here?”
“Because you need me.”
“Or because you want to be?”
I didn’t answer.
He stepped closer.
“Soo-jin. I lost my company today. But I didn’t lose them. And I don’t want to lose you.”
“Jae-hyun—”
“I’m not asking for anything. Just... stay. Until this is over.”
I nodded.
8:00 PM - Bedtime
He read the story.
Min-ah fell asleep on his chest.
Min-woo on his lap.
He carried them to bed.
One by one.
Kissed their foreheads.
When he came out, I was waiting in the hall.
“Thank you,” he said.
“For what?”
“For today. For staying.”
He pulled me into a hug.
Tight.
I could feel his heart.
Fast.
“I’m scared,” he whispered.
“Of what?”
“Of getting used to this. Of losing it.”
“You won’t.”
He pulled back. Looked at me.
And kissed me.
Not desperate.
Not rushed.
Just... real.
Like he needed to know I was there.
When we broke apart, he whispered:
“Stay with me tonight. Not for the kids. With me.”
I should’ve said no.
I said yes.
11:00 PM - His Room
First time.
No sweatpants.
No crisis.
Just him. And me.
He was gentle.
Careful.
Like I might break.
Like he might break.
After, we laid there.
His arm around me.
“My company is gone,” he said.
“I know.”
“I’m broke on paper. Assets frozen.”
“I know.”
“So why are you here?”
“Because you’re not broke here,” I said, touching his chest.
He kissed my forehead.
“Don’t leave me, Soo-jin.”
“I won’t.”

10:00 AM - New Plan
Jae-hyun at the kitchen table. Laptop.
“What are you doing?”
“Building something new. Consulting. Small projects. Enough to pass the state check.”
Min-woo: “Daddy, are you still our daddy?”
Jae-hyun pulled him up.
“I’m more your daddy now than ever, champ.”
Min-ah: “Is Auntie staying forever?”
Jae-hyun looked at me.
“Do you want to, Auntie?”
All eyes on me.
“Yes,” I said. “I want to.”
6:00 PM - State Check-in Call
Social worker on video.
Saw the kids. Saw the house. Saw Jae-hyun cooking.
“Everything looks good. See you next month, Mr. Kang.”
When the call ended, he exhaled.
“We did it.”
He pulled me into the living room.
Danced with me.
No music.
Just us.
Kids watching, giggling.
11:00 PM - Balcony
Seoul lights.
He had a beer. I had tea.
“I’m not a CEO anymore,” he said.
“You’re still their dad.”
“And yours?”
“What?”
“The nanny I fell for.”
I didn’t answer.
He didn’t push.
Just took my hand.
