Chapter 5!!
The New House - "Not marriage. Forever." State gives final approval, and he builds us a home
---
UNTITLED
Chapter 5: Not Marriage. Forever.
Rule #1 of starting over:
Leave the mansion behind.
Rule #2: Buy ramen and a couch.
Rule #3: Tell the woman you love her before the state does.
We did all 3 in one week.
---
9:00 AM - Monday, Moving Day
The mansion was empty.
No staff. No board. No lawyers.
Just boxes. 12 of them.
And us 4.
Jae-hyun wore jeans and a hoodie.
Loading boxes into a rented truck.
Min-woo and Min-ah were "supervisors".
Yelling: "That one is fragile! It has my LEGOs!"
I was taping the last box.
He came up behind me.
Wrapped his arms around me.
"Ready to leave this place?"
"Ready to start ours."
The new house:
Busan. 3 bedrooms. Ocean view.
Not a mansion.
A home.
300 million won. Paid in cash.
12:00 PM - The New House
Key in my hand.
The one he gave me on the balcony.
We opened the door.
Smelled like wood and paint.
Empty.
Perfect.
Min-ah ran to the windows.
"The ocean, Daddy!"
Min-woo: "I get the room with the blue walls!"
Jae-hyun looked at me.
"What do you think, Soo-jin?"
"I think... it's us."
He smiled.
Real one.
No stress. No board.
Just him.
3:00 PM - IKEA Trip
We had 200 million left.
Budget: 50 million for furniture.
The rest for the kids. And us.
We fought over a couch.
Me: "Gray. Practical."
Him: "Blue. The kids will spill on it anyway."
Kids: "RED!"
We bought blue.
At checkout, he paid.
Card worked.
He exhaled like he’d been holding his breath for months.
In the car, he said:
"I haven't felt this light in years."
"Because you’re not carrying a company."
"Because I’m carrying my family."
6:00 PM - First Night
Floor mattresses.
No beds yet.
Ramen for dinner.
We ate on the floor.
Min-seo fell asleep between us.
Min-woo used Jae-hyun’s arm as a pillow.
When the kids were asleep, he whispered:
"Is this okay? Is this enough?"
I took his hand.
"This is everything."
Tuesday - State Final Visit
Social worker came.
Walked through the house.
Saw the kids' rooms. Saw the kitchen.
Saw Jae-hyun making pancakes.
In sweatpants.
She smiled.
"Mr. Kang. This is good. Really good."
"Thank you."
"Final report will be submitted Friday. After this, no more check-ins."
When she left, Jae-hyun picked me up.
Spun me.
"We’re free! Officially!"
Kids cheered.
Wednesday - Job Interview
He had one.
Small construction consulting firm.
CEO position. 20 employees.
Not billions. Millions.
He came home at 5.
Tired. But smiling.
"They offered it to me."
"Are you taking it?"
"I start Monday. 9 to 6. Home for dinner."
I hugged him.
"9 to 6 dad. I like that version."
Thursday - The Talk
Kids at the park.
Just us.
On the new balcony.
"Soo-jin," he said.
"Yeah?"
"I need to say something. And I need you to hear me."
My heart raced.
"I’m not asking you to marry me. Not yet. I’m not asking for a contract. I’m asking for forever."
He took my hands.
"I don’t have a company. I don’t have billions. I have this house. I have a new job. I have two kids who call you Auntie but look at you like Mom. And I have you."
Tears.
"Stay," he said. "Not as a nanny. As mine. As ours. Forever."
I nodded. Couldn’t speak.
He pulled me into his arms.
"Say something."
"Yes," I whispered. "Forever."
He kissed me.
Slow.
Like a promise.
Friday - State Approval Email
CASE CLOSED. CUSTODY PERMANENT. CONGRATULATIONS MR. KANG.
Jae-hyun read it out loud.
Then threw his phone.
Picked up the kids.
"WE DID IT!"
We ordered pizza.
Ate on the new blue couch.
Watched a movie.
All 4 of us under one blanket.
Saturday - First Fight As A Family
About dishes.
About bedtime.
About who ate the last yogurt.
Normal.
Beautiful.
That night, he came to my room.
"Can I stay?"
"Is that allowed?"
"We’re forever, remember?"
He did.
Sunday - Beach Day
Busan beach. 10 minutes away.
Kites. Sandcastles. Ice cream.
Jae-hyun got sunburned.
I laughed at him.
Min-ah: "Daddy, will Auntie live with us forever?"
Jae-hyun looked at me.
"She already does, princess."
8:00 PM - After Kids Sleep
We sat on the floor.
Surrounded by unpacked boxes.
His head on my lap.
My fingers in his hair.
"I’m sorry it’s not fancy," he said.
"I don’t want fancy. I want this."
"You deserve fancy."
"I deserve you."
He sat up.
Looked at me.
"Marry me. Someday. When you’re ready. Not for the kids. Not for the state. For me."
I kissed him.
"Ask me again in a year."
"Deal."
11:00 PM - Reflection
Bank: 150,000,000 WON
Job: Starts Monday
House: Ours
Kids: Safe
Us: Forever
No board. No scandal.
Just ramen. And blue couch.
And him.
He fell asleep holding my hand.
I whispered:
"Not marriage. Forever."
He mumbled in his sleep:
"Forever."
