10:00 AM - Saturday, 2 Weeks After Moving
Doorbell.
I was making pancakes.
Jae-hyun was helping Min-woo with homework.
I opened it.
And froze.
Woman. Early 30s.
Designer bag. Sunglasses.
Heels. In Busan.
And eyes. Just like Min-ah’s.
“Can I help you?”
“I’m here for my children.”
My blood went cold.
10:01 AM - The Ex
She walked in. Like she owned it.
Looked around.
“Cozy. Small. Cute.”
Jae-hyun stood up.
Face blank.
“Yoon-hee. What are you doing here?”
“Visiting my kids, Jae-hyun. Or do I need an appointment?”
Min-woo and Min-ah peeked from the kitchen.
“Daddy?”
Jae-hyun: “Go to your rooms, please. Now.”
They ran. Scared.
Yoon-hee smiled at me.
“And you must be... the nanny.”
“Han Soo-jin.”
“The one from the news. Cute.”
10:10 AM - The Papers
She dropped a folder on the table.
“Custody petition. I’m filing for full custody. I was in London for work. But I’m back now. And I want my children.”
Jae-hyun didn’t touch it.
“You gave up custody 4 years ago. Signed the papers.”
“I was young. Stupid. I was chasing my career.”
“And now?”
“Now I’m ready to be a mother.”
She looked at me.
“You can go. I’ll take it from here.”
10:15 AM - Jae-hyun Snaps
“Get out.”
“Excuse me?”
“I said get out of my house. You don’t get to walk in here after 4 years and demand them.”
“They’re mine too.”
“Were. You signed them away.”
His voice was low. Dangerous.
The CEO voice.
Yoon-hee laughed.
“You think the court will side with you? Unemployed CEO. And a nanny? Please.”
She pointed at me.
“You. You’re fired. Pack your things.”
I didn’t move.
Jae-hyun stepped between us.
“Touch her again and I’ll have you arrested for trespassing.”
“This is my house too.”
“Not anymore.”
11:00 AM - After She Left
She left. Threatening.
“See you in court, Jae-hyun.”
The house was silent.
Kids were hiding upstairs.
Jae-hyun sat on the floor.
Head in hands.
“I’m so sorry, Soo-jin.”
“Don’t be. What do we do?”
“We fight. Again.”
He looked up at me.
Eyes red.
“She’s going to try to take them. And she’s going to try to take you from me.”
I knelt in front of him.
“Then we don’t let her.”
3:00 PM - Lawyer Meeting
Our lawyer. Same one.
“Ms. Yoon has grounds. She’s the biological mother. She’s rich. She’s stable.”
“But she abandoned them,” I said.
“4 years ago. Courts are sympathetic to ‘changed’ parents.”
Jae-hyun: “What do we need?”
“Proof that the children are better off here. With you. With her.”
He looked at me.
“With us.”
6:00 PM - Talking to the Kids
We sat them down.
Min-ah was crying.
“Is Mommy taking us away?”
Jae-hyun pulled her onto his lap.
“No, baby. No one is taking you anywhere.”
“But she’s our mommy.”
“She is,” he said carefully. “But Soo-jin is your family too. And I am. And we’re not going anywhere.”
Min-woo: “I don’t want to leave you, Auntie.”
I hugged him.
“You’re not going to, champ.”
8:00 PM - Jae-hyun and Me
Kitchen. Cleaning.
Neither of us talking.
Finally he said:
“She’s going to say you’re just the nanny.”
“I am.”
“No. You’re not.”
He turned off the water.
Turned to me.
“Soo-jin. I need to ask you something. And you can say no.”
“What?”
“Be their mom. In court. Legally. Stand with me. As their mother.”
I stared.
“What?”
“I’m not asking you to marry me. I’m asking you to stand up and say ‘these are my kids too’. Because they are.”
Tears.
“Jae-hyun, I—”
“I know it’s fast. I know it’s unfair. But I can’t do this without you.”
I nodded.
“Yes. I will.”
He pulled me into a hug.
Buried his face in my neck.
“Thank you. God, thank you.”
Next Day - Sunday
We took the kids to the beach.
All 4 of us.
Like a family.
Took photos.
Built sandcastles.
For evidence.
For us.
Min-ah drew a picture.
4 stick figures.
“Daddy, Mommy, Me, Oppa.”
She gave it to me.
I cried.
Monday - Court Prep
Lawyer: “You need to be ready, Miss Han. They’ll ask you hard questions.”
“I’m ready.”
Jae-hyun squeezed my hand under the table.
“We’re ready.”
Wednesday - The Hearing
Courtroom again.
Yoon-hee in a white suit.
3 lawyers.
Our side: Me. Him. 1 lawyer.
And 2 kids drawing in the back.
Her lawyer: “Mr. Kang is unemployed. His girlfriend is a former nanny. The children need stability. A mother.”
Jae-hyun’s lawyer: “Mr. Kang has stable housing, income, and a support system. The children are thriving.”
Then me.
On the stand.
“Miss Han, what is your relationship to the children?”
“I’m their nanny.”
“And to Mr. Kang?”
I looked at him.
“I’m their family.”
Gasps.
“Are you in a relationship?”
“Yes.”
“Are you their mother?”
“I’m trying to be.”
I cried.
“I’ve been with them for a month. I’ve bandaged their knees. I’ve stayed up with fevers. I love them. And I love their dad. And I’m not going anywhere.”
The judge looked at me. Long.
Then at the kids.
Then at Yoon-hee.
The Verdict
“Custody remains with Mr. Kang. Ms. Yoon will have supervised visitation, 2 hours, once a month. Miss Han is recognized as a guardian for the purposes of school and medical decisions.”
We won.
Yoon-hee screamed.
“THIS ISN’T OVER!”
And stormed out.
After - Car
Jae-hyun couldn’t drive.
He was shaking.
I drove.
Kids in the back. Quiet.
When we got home, he pulled me to him.
“You did it. You saved them.”
“We did it.”
He kissed me.
In front of the kids.
Didn’t care.
Min-woo: “Does this mean you’re our mommy now?”
I looked at Jae-hyun.
He nodded.
“Yes, baby. I’m your mommy now.”
Min-ah ran to me.
Hugged my legs.
“Mommy.”
I broke.
Held her.
“Mommy’s here.”
11:00 PM - Bedroom
Exhausted.
Happy.
Terrified.
Jae-hyun laid behind me.
Arm around me.
“You called yourself their mom.”
“I meant it.”
“I know.”
Silence.
“I love you, Soo-jin.”
“I love you too.”
