UNTITLED
Chapter 7: Will You Be My Wife Anyway
Rule #1 of getting proposed to:
Don’t expect it.
Rule #2: Don’t cry.
Rule #3: Don’t say yes before the kids do.
I failed all 3. Perfectly.
---
8:00 AM - Saturday, 1 Month After Court
No court. No lawyers. No ex.
Just pancakes.
And a weird energy from Jae-hyun.
He kept looking at me.
Smiling.
Then looking away.
Min-woo: “Daddy, why are you acting weird?”
Jae-hyun choked on coffee.
“I’m not.”
Min-ah: “Yes you are. You’re in love.”
I dropped the spatula.
10:00 AM - The Kids' Plan
They pulled me to the living room.
Sat me on the couch.
“Close your eyes, Mommy.”
“Why?”
“Just do it!”
I closed them.
Heard shuffling. Whispering.
Then: “Open!”
Balloon arch. Handmade.
Banner: WILL YOU BE OUR MOMMY FOREVER?
And in the middle: Jae-hyun.
On one knee.
With a box.
My heart stopped.
10:01 AM - The Proposal
He wasn’t holding a ring.
He was holding 3 things.
A key. A bracelet. And a letter.
“Soo-jin,” he said. Voice shaking.
“When I met you, you were making pancakes in my kitchen. I was pretending to be broke. You thought I was harmless.”
Kids giggled.
“I’m not harmless. I’m in love with you. With us.”
He opened the box.
Inside: Not a ring.
A braided bracelet. Blue and gray.
Like the couch.
“I can’t give you billions. I can’t give you a company. But I can give you this house. This family. Me. Every day.”
He looked at the kids.
“Min-woo, Min-ah. Can I ask Mommy to be my wife?”
Both of them: “YES!”
Back to me.
“Soo-jin Han. Will you be my wife? Not for the state. Not for the kids. For me. Will you marry me?”
I was crying.
“Jae-hyun—”
“You can say no. But please don’t.”
I nodded.
“Yes. Yes, I will.”
The kids screamed.
He slid the bracelet on my wrist.
Then kissed me.
Kids cheered: “THEY’RE GETTING MARRIED!”
11:00 AM - After
He couldn’t stop touching me.
Hand. Shoulder. Hair.
Like he needed to check I was real.
Min-woo: “Can we have a big wedding?”
Min-ah: “With cake and flowers!”
Jae-hyun: “Anything you want, champ.”
I was still staring at the bracelet.
“It’s perfect.”
“It’s from me. Not a company. Not a board. Just me.”
2:00 PM - Wedding Planning With 4 Year Olds
Location: Beach. 5 minutes away.
Theme: Blue. Like the couch.
Cake: Chocolate. 2 layers.
Guests: 20.
Flower girls: Min-ah and her doll.
Ring bearer: Min-woo and his toy car.
Jae-hyun wrote it all down.
Serious.
Like it was a board meeting.
Me: “Are you sure? It’s fast.”
He took my hand.
“I’ve waited 4 years to be a dad. I’ve waited 1 month to be yours. I’m not waiting anymore.”
4:00 PM - Telling People
Call to Mrs. Kang.
“Son? What’s wrong?”
“I’m getting married.”
Silence. Then crying.
“I’m so happy for you, Jae-hyun. For all of you.”
Call to my mom in hospital.
“Omma, I’m getting married.”
“To the CEO?”
“To the dad.”
She cried too.
6:00 PM - Dinner
Homemade.
He cooked.
Burned the rice.
We ate it anyway.
After, he pulled me to the balcony.
Ocean. Sunset.
He put the key from the box in my hand.
“What’s this?”
“To our bedroom. Our bathroom. Our life. No more guest room.”
I kissed him.
“Are you nervous?”
“Terrified,” he said. “That you’ll wake up and realize you can do better.”
“I already did better. I got you.”
8:00 PM - Bedtime
Kids wouldn’t sleep.
Too excited.
“Will you wear a dress, Mommy?”
“Yes, baby.”
“Will Daddy cry?”
“Probably,” I said.
Jae-hyun: “I’m right here.”
Finally they slept.
10:00 PM - Our Room
First night as fiancés.
He laid me down.
Careful.
Like I was glass.
“I love you,” he whispered.
“I love you too.”
“Thank you for saying yes.”
“Thank you for asking.”
We didn’t sleep much.
Next Morning - Sunday
Headlines weren’t about us.
For once.
Just us.
We went to get wedding stuff.
Simple dress. White.
Simple suit. Navy.
Kids picked the flowers.
Total cost: 2 million won.
He paid.
Smiled the whole time.
Wednesday - One Week Later
Wedding invitations sent.
20 people.
Family. Close friends. Lawyer.
No board. No press.
Just us.
Friday - Rehearsal
At the beach.
Min-woo practiced walking with the ring car.
Min-ah practiced throwing petals.
Jae-hyun practiced not crying.
Failed.
He pulled me aside.
“Are you sure? Last chance to run.”
I hit his arm.
“I’m sure. Are you?”
“I’ve never been more sure of anything.”
Saturday - Wedding Day
9:00 AM
Hair. Makeup. Me and Min-ah.
She wore a tiny white dress.
“Mommy, you’re pretty.”
“You’re prettier.”
10:00 AM
Jae-hyun in navy suit.
No tie.
Hair perfect.
Eyes red already.
Min-woo in a mini suit.
Holding the ring car like it was gold.
10:30 AM - The Aisle
20 chairs. Beach.
String quartet from a speaker.
Music started.
I walked.
With Min-ah holding my hand.
And there he was.
Crying.
Openly.
When I reached him, he whispered:
“You’re so beautiful.”
“You’re crying.”
“I can’t help it.”
10:35 AM - The Vows
Officiant: Our lawyer friend.
“Do you, Kang Jae-hyun—”
“I do,” he cut him off.
Everyone laughed.
“—take Han Soo-jin to be your wife?”
“I do. I do. I choose her. Every day. For the rest of my life.”
My turn.
“I do. I choose you. I choose us. I choose this family.”
10:37 AM - The Rings
Min-woo drove the car up.
Jae-hyun took my ring. Simple band.
Slid it on.
“Mrs. Kang.”
I took his.
“Mr. Kang.”
10:38 AM - The Kiss
“ You may kiss the bride.”
He did.
Deep.
Real.
Kids yelling: “AGAIN! AGAIN!”
11:00 AM - Reception
20 people.
BBQ on the beach.
Cake.
Dancing.
First dance.
Just us.
To an old song on his phone.
He sang badly.
I loved it.
Min-woo: “Dad, you’re crying again.”
Jae-hyun: “Happy tears, champ.”
3:00 PM - Goodbye
Guests left.
We stayed.
All 4 of us.
On the beach.
Jae-hyun laid in the sand.
Kids on his chest.
Me next to him.
Ring on my finger.
Bracelet on my wrist.
“My family,” he said.
“Ours,” I answered.
7:00 PM - Home
New house.
New name on the door: THE KANGS
Bedtime.
He read the story.
Cried at the end.
Kids: “Dad, it’s just a book.”
11:00 PM - Bedroom
Door closed.
Just us.
Husband and wife.
He took my face in his hands.
“My wife.”
“My husband.”
We made love.
Slow.
Safe.
Like a promise.
After, he held me.
“Best day of my life,” he whispered.
“Mines too.”
