Dionne
They chatted behind me all the way to class. Zuri was still laughing loudly, and I wanted to warn her but once I turned to her, the class teacher came into the class. I was facing Zuri with an angry expression on my face, yet to say anything.
"Dionne! It's your first day in class as a transfer student, but you're already causing trouble," she said.
I shook my head to deny it, but she spoke again.
"You ought to be settling in and getting to know your school better, but you choose to make trouble instead," she said.
It was maddening. How did she just come up with the conclusion that I was the one making trouble when she had not even heard what was happening? I felt my cheeks burn with anger and embarrassment and I would have insisted that she hear me out first before coming to a conclusion about what was truly happening, but she asked me to sit down and asked everyone else to do so.
I realized why this had happened without being told. I was a nobody and had no background. It was only normal that she would be on the side of those who she knew to be influential. She was not going to stand by my side because, for all everyone knew, I was a transfer student, and they didn't really have any information on who exactly I was, apart from the glaring fact that I didn't fully belong in the social class of the other students and that I was weak, and like most weak werewolves, I kept to myself so that I would not get bullied.
I took permission and left the class to go and change my soiled clothes and wear something else. All the while, I worried that skipping class would affect my credits, and I had to do well enough to prove to my mother that I would excel in a college in the human society since I didn't want to remain in the werewolf society after senior high school.
Later after class, I found a spot to sit alone and mull over everything that had been happening all the while I had been there. I did not think I would be able to eventually blend into the school and mingle with the students, not with people like the quadruplets and Zuri, who were out to make life miserable for me.
But then, I had to constantly remind myself that I was only going to endure all of them for the next one year, and it would be the last time I crossed paths with them.
While I was sitting alone, I heard someone's steps and I turned around. A girl handed me a sandwich.
"Hey, I brought you a sandwich. I didn't see you at the cafeteria and I figured I'd get you something since you might be hungry," she said. I took the sandwich.
"Thank you so much, what's your name and why are you nice to me?" I asked her. She smiled and then came to sit with me on the stairs.
"I'm nice to you because I can be a nice person when I want to be," she said with a chuckle before adding, "My name is Violet."
"Thank you so much, Violet," I said.
"I know you don't like Zuri, and she doesn't like you either," she said suddenly, and I sighed.
"She's been picking on me and I don't even know what I've done wrong to her. We don't even know each other," I said.
"She can be an absolute i***t like that. She is obsessed with the quadruplets, and she basically bullies any girl she thinks the quadruplets have taken interest in and considering how Hardin spoke to you earlier, she must have sensed a threat haha.” she explained.
I nodded.
"Whatever she likes, I hate it. I'd hate and reject the quadruplets even if they were given to me as objects to be owned," she said.
I laughed, surprised that there was someone who was not as insane as the rest of the school seemed to be about the quadruplets.
"But what if Zuri comes to you and tries to hurt you because you don't like her?" I asked, genuinely concerned.
She laughed.
"She can't do anything to me. She knows I'll take care of her s**t if she comes too close. But she would not. She is my cousin, her mom is my dad's sister and needs my dad's help to run her company. If she does anything to ruin the friendship between our parents, her mom's company will suffer," she said.
I smiled, impressed that she seemed to have the upper hand over Zuri, but I asked her one question,
"Why don't you want the quadruplets like the rest of the girls do? They're insanely desirable," I remarked, and she scoffed.
"That's the point. I'm not interested in them because everyone else is. I only want to meet my mate. That's all I care about. How about you? Do you have a mate yet?" She asked me. There was little hesitation on my part, but I spoke at last.
"My dad was very abusive. He hit my mom a lot, and then one day he tried to touch me inappropriately. My mom was enraged, and we had to finally leave him for good. I don't want to be mated to anyone, I'm not interested in the union," I said. She shook her head.
"I'm so sorry you had to go through that, it must have been so tough. I’m glad you turned out great despite that.”
“And I'm sure it'd be beautiful. Don't let your past define your life. And hey, today is my birthday. I come to my place after classes. It will be a small party in the evening," she invited me as we got off the stairs and headed for class.
“I'm not really a party person, but I’ll try to attend yours.” I said.
“Don’t try. You must come! You don’t have any excuse not to, it’ll be fun.”
"Okay, fine. I’ll come to your birthday party, Violet," I assured her with a smile. It was the first time I had been smiling for the day and I owed it to her.

Later after class, mom called to ask me how I was settling into the school and how everything was going with the quadruplets. I told her I was having the best time of my life being with them in the same school, and she was impressed.
