“David, I need a new secretary in two days” Elvis said as he stepped into the top floor
“Let me rephrase” He said cutting David off before he even started speaking
“I need a competent secretary in two days”
“I’ll put out a post immediately sir” David responded quickly, taking notes on his tablet
David was Mr Elvis Grant’s personal assistant, he had worked with him for years and had seen him get a new secretary so many times that he wondered why he still had his job because he always hired them yet they happened to be incompetent in Elvis’ standards over and over again.
“Hire an incompetent secretary one more time and risk your job here, in other words, if I let them go, you go with them” Elvis said interrupting David’s line of thought
“O…okk…kayyy sir” David stuttered as he followed his boss into his office.
He knew he had to play both roles today and for as long as he had no secretary so he had to act fast for his own sanity.
David was checking his schedule for the day when Mr Elvis’ phone rang on the table. They both looked up, startled at the sound and Elvis checked his phone to see who it was. His expression turned sour as he picked up the call.
“If it isn’t little Mr CEO, going around annulling all the deals we’ve worked hard to get” The person on the other line said the moment he picked up. He was silent as he didn’t want to say anything to get his grandfather angrier than he already was.
“You answer me when I speak to you Elvis” Mr Harrison Grant, his grandfather said to him
“Yes sir” Elvis responded, signaling with his hands for David to leave his office as he knew this was about to be a long talk
David left and closed the door behind him before Elvis continued
“What exactly do you mean, grandfather?” He asked
“Don’t you try and act oblivious to what you have just caused, or did you think I would not know what is going on in my own company, right under my nose? His grandfather raised his voice from the other end.
“Answer me, Elvis” He screamed even louder and started coughing
“Are you okay, grandfather?” Elvis asked, his voice laced with concern
“I’m o…ok..kay” he said in between hitched breaths “You seem so worried about my health but you’re trying your best to get me back to the hospital” His grandfather said, lowering his voice and counting his words
“Why would you say such a thing, grandfather? I’m doing my best to see that we top the charts this season, this was a silly omission” Elvis said
“What happened? Who is responsible for this? Who…who” He started coughing again and now Elvis was worried
“You don’t seem like you’re fine, I’ll be there in ten minutes” Elvis said standing up and throwing on his jacket, he walked out of his office as fast as possible, grabbing his keys on the way out
“Good, come and tell me why you let that happen” Grandfather responded
Elvis ended the call and used the elevator to the ground floor, dialing David’s number immediately
David was already waiting on the ground floor
“Is my driver ready?” He asked David
“Yes sir, he’s in the car” David responded
“Cancel all other meetings for the day, reschedule the important ones, I have to go see Mr Grant” Elvis said
“On it sir” David said as he took notes on his tablet
“Any applications for secretary yet?” Elvis asked as he walked out the office, David following closely behind
“A ton, sir. Apparently, everyone wants to work with Grant Group” David said, proud of how many applications he could pull in such short notice
“Great, interview them tomorrow and pick the best fit, a competent one, remember that” Elvis said to David
Elvis stepped into his car and David shut the door behind him
“Yes sir” He said, bowing his head slightly as the car drove away
“To Mr Grant’s house” Elvis told the driver
The driver nodded in response and the drive was quiet as Elvis thought of possible ways to water this down so that this man doesn’t give himself a high blood pressure.
