Vivian's pov
Every nerve in my body trembled as I walked down the busy streets of New York City with no known destination.
“Hey! Watch where you are going!” A man roared as I almost bumped into him.
“I'm sorry”, I mumbled an apology.
“Oh. Poor girl”, I sympathized with myself as I sat on a long bench enjoying the serenity of nature at night. Suddenly, I began to tear up again.
“i***t. Is this how you're going to continue - crying? You'd better look for a solution and stop sulking like a five-year old” My thoughts chastised me.
“Is it really that easy? No, tell me. You think I enjoy that I'm crying? Do you really think I'm not regretting why I did not stab Dora in her back with the kitchen knife?” I screamed out.
Everyone passing that moment looked at me worriedly, but I was bothered less. This thing called conscience needs to be taught a lesson.
“I'm so sorry about that. Never knew you were that hurt. We'll make it through this phase”. She sympathized with me.
“Now would you get lobster rolls to eat?” I asked. I nodded gently.
Now, I must be really crazy.
I dragged my feet lazily into the restaurant as I made my way to a table.
“How may we help you ma'am?” The waitress, a lady probably in her early forties, attended to me.
“Can I please get seven sticks of lobster rolls?” I pouted my lips, suddenly forgetting my predicament.
The waitress’ widened eyes suddenly made me remember that I was growing another life in me. I almost forgot. Silly me.
“I'm eating for two” I smiled at her, and she laughed, getting the message.
“Here's ten. You can keep the rest”, she arrived.
“I really appreciate. I will never forget this gesture” I said in between the rolls.
After eating, I just laid my head on the table to figure out my next move. Nothing seemed to be practical.
“We're done for today ma'am” a voice woke me up from my sleep. It was the same waitress.
“You seem to be a kind lady. I'm stranded. I just needed a place for my baby and I to sleep that night. I can stay in the restaurant and leave tomorrow morning”, I pleaded with tears.
“I don't know you, neither would you expect me to trust you, but for humanity and motherhood, you can stay with me for just this night” she said grudgingly.
“I'd really appreciate that, mum”, I said, and she smiled.
Whether or not this was a safe risk, I cared less. We got into her car and she zoomed off at speed.
“You might want to tell me what a young girl like you is doing outside at this hour of the day?” She maintained brief eye contact with me through the rear mirror as she continued driving.
I still don't believe there are some people that cannot recognize me. Fame and power really do not make the world revolve round someone.
“I'm Vivian and I found out my boyfriend was cheating on me and I left”, I told her the half-truth, as I wasn't sure who she really was.
“I'm a mother. I can tell when a child tells lies. But I'd leave you” she smiled.
We finally got to her mini flat. It was a moderate apartment that was well furnished. It screamed more of memories than luxury. I noticed frames of her and a young lady.
“That's my daughter” she told me as she offered me a glass of water.
“She’s currently doing her master's in Anatomy. Hopefully, when she's done, you might not find me working in the restaurant any longer”. She smiled.
“You smile a lot”. I finally made a statement.
“Life has a way of making us think we have lost hope, but all you have to do is smile and breathe. Never forget that” she tucked a strand of hair into the back of my ear gently.
“Are you always this nice as you're pretending?” I questioned, following her as she made her way to the kitchen.
“Whether I am pretending or not, you and your baby have a place to sleep that night” she replied.
“True” I affirmed.
“ I was once like you - stranded, confused and hopeless. But I found help from a woman. Now, I have a place to sleep, and my daughter will soon be done with her master's. While the world is a wicked place, life has always taught me to be good to people”, she narrated.
“Hmmm” I heaved.
“You need to sleep. You'll be leaving very early tomorrow”, she reminded me.
“I thought you were nice”, I pouted and we shared a beautiful laugh.
Dawn approached faster than I desired. Mrs Connell, as I had learned yesterday, was so nice to prepare a warm bath for me. Within two hours, I was all ready for whatever life wanted to give me.
“Take good care of yourself and don't forget what I told you” she waved as I left her apartment.
I made my way to Lincoln Airport. They own almost everywhere in New York City.
“Hi, Mrs. Lincoln”, the attendant said loudly, much to my dismay.
“I need a favor”, I lowered my voice, successfully gauging her excitement.
“ I need to leave this country as soon as possible, and I don't want any traces of my being here” She gave me a suspicious look.
I pushed a bundle of cash to her and she nodded immediately.
“Prepare the next flight for me please” I begged.
“Canada ma'am” she responded promptly.
“Canada it is then” I nodded.
“All passengers for the Canada flight should please meet in the next twenty minutes” a loud voice echoed.
The attendant looked at me and I gave a grateful look.
I took my seat beside the window.
“Let's call this phase our new beginning,” I said to my fetus, gently rubbing my belly.
